"Ask Genghis was first published in January of 2008 as a legal means of paying off the large gambling debts incured by the Khan due to his love of "betting the ponys."" It has potential, especially if we send Genghis requests for relationship advice.

A professor at Dartmouth attempted to sue the university and several freshman students ostensibly because her students didn't respect her, but also because, she claims, her coworkers and supervisor harassed her. She also seems to be claiming discrimination, but comments on various blogs from students who attended her classes (including students who were not graded by her - scroll down to comments) say that she was just a very bad lecturer. She has been very busy though: as of two days ago she was suing, the next day she publicly announced that she would no longer sue but would seek national press coverage. Also? She's going to write a book. more inside

"I imaged a powerful reversal of the urinal drain would be like an elephant and used this as the theme," says the designer. It can clean a urinal in 10 seconds and save 8 litres of water per urinal. Clever and pretty.

'How to begin to educate a child. First rule: leave him alone. Second rule: leave him alone. Third rule: leave him alone' While not in the same realm as Free Range Kids, idle parenting calls for parents to give kids back their stress-free playtime.

Disney has a fist in every pie. (Main link is a Slate article about one man's full-immersion experience in Florida's Disneyworld resort.) Grown women can now walk down the aisle in Disney Princess-themed gowns, as can their bridesmaids and flowergirls. Once they start having babies, they can decorate the nursery with Princess-themed cribs and changing tables. Disney promotes healthy eating and brands its own produce through i-Farms. They even have a town: Celebration, Florida.

Earth Hour 2008: turn your lights off, you bum! Earth Hour, conceived in Australia in 2005, has become a worldwide event with (woo) over 20 cities officially taking part. It's a chance to show your commitment to climate change and sustainable energy, or, you know, something along those lines. Christchurch will be the first to switch off at 8pm tonight, and San Francisco the last, 20 hours later. more inside

A 1913 article about the brand spanking new and shiny Panama Canal. Currently the canal is being widened, because the Panamax supertankers, built especially to maximise tonnage while using the Panama Canal, just aren't big enough any more. The expansion will double the canal's capacity, which is currently 14,000 vessels annually.

Pieter Hugo takes passport-style photos of South Africans whether black, white or albino. More of his work is available on his own website. I love his "The Hyena & Other Men" series.
