I think you have to make a distinction between "Mefi" inviting new mwmbers and Mathowie inviting new members. Remember, a sizable sample of MeFi users have been pushing for new open memberships.
Personally, I have been a obsessive frequenter / not so obsessive poster/commentator in the blue for a really long time, yet MoFo (the purple?) has quickly risen to the top of the pile for me.
It just feels so - refreshing.
I came for the low user number, and stayed for the great posts. I think you are all onto something here, and have been wondering when a MeFi splinter group would form due to the inability to sign up. Good work here.
