That was wonderful! Here's to hoping we'll see more typography and design-related posts on Mofi :).

Another handy tip: Safari's HTML rendering component is based off of the K Desktop Environment's HTML renderer: KHTML. Though fonts and sizings would vary between Linux and Mac OS X, you can get a general idea of any major structural breakage by checking a site in Konqueror under Linux.

What criteria must a word meet to be a valid word? If an imagined word that falls into popular usage can become a "legitimate word," then can a word that falls to disuse not forfeit its standing as well? I submit that certainsome1 is attempting to ruin this community through his nebulochaotic posts! This galimatias must be purged from MoFi!

I've got two phone lines... hrm... *goes to read specifics of 1and1 deal*

oops...i guess italics don't work here? The <i> tag isn't valid XHTML, so it is ignored by MetaPhilter. The same goes for <b>. In their place you can use <em> and <strong>.

Normally, I wouldn't weigh in on this issue, but as we are not yet 50 strong, I feel my opinion must carry some weight: We're be glad to have you, Fes! As far as user auth... I've installed MetaPhilter over on my box to play with and try to get a feel for the code. Once I do, I'll submit proposals and/or patches to Jack. I would appreciate Tracicle's opinion on appropriate measures to help direct my tinkering. Also, any php/mySQL folks please get in touch with me. I have very little experience, though I can flesh out a decent plan.

How many hoops will a user desiring membership jump through that a user wishing to disrupt the community would not? As far as authentication, I was surprised that it was not a part of the process, but it will not solve everything. We must also have mechanisms to cull the detrimental members from the masses. IP-based banning has the potential of wiping out innocent users in instances where connections are shared. It is also useless against users without static IP addresses (dialup, some DSL, and some Cable users). Username banning does not prevent the offender from simply registering again. E-mail address banning is ineffective thanks to the myriad of free providers, and inexpensive domain registration. There is no assured way to open the doors to new members without having a few bad seeds slip by. The most effective response is to simply remove the pleasure that might be derived from trolling MoFi. The community response, along with proper banning measures should ensure a reasonable level of signal to noise. Also, perhaps a twenty-four hour delay between sign up and sign in would help prevent trolling impulses, though that may be a bit discouraging to budding new members.
