In "Curious George: women scientists in film."

Brainstorm sounds to me as if it fits your requirements perfectly. The discovery that drives the plot is made by a distinctly non-glamourous female scientist, played beautifully by Louise Fletcher, and Natalie Wood plays a top-flight product packaging designer.

In "Ceefax online - perhaps the least essential service ever created."

Yeah, I know I'm late, but this is an interesting addition: the BBC has demanded that the site be shut down for copyright infringement.

In "Dr Who Leaked"

It's funny seeing "The BBC was unavailable for comment." on a BBC website. God bless 'em.

In "What's the best free thing you've ever scored? Love and lunch excluded."

Late to the game, as always, but just last week I was given this Primare CD player in return for building my friend a computer (music server) and a network to run it on. It's amazing, and not something I could afford to actually buy for myself. Free stuff rules.

In "Curious George; Rape VS Beat-down"

Bernockle, the child abuse question is an issue that is explored in the article I linked above. It's not all about war trauma, that's just the jumping-off point.

Nal, I got that, I was just trying to say that for me that was the 'best' choice, but that everyone's 'best' might well differ. I don't think there can be such a thing as an objective 'best' in situations like that. It has to be subjective.

Nal, that was me - and respect for my own life was exactly the point. I'd rather take the hit than compromise the things *I* believe are truly important. Non-violence, and not submitting to violence, are important to me. That night I found out *how* important. Obviously your decision may have differed from mine.

moneyjane, you might find this article an interesting read. [OT-ish] A stranger once tried to, um, orally rape me at knife-point after a night in a club. I refused to do as he wanted, on point of principle, and he ran away rather than stick the blade in. I still think it is the bravest thing I ever did, and am enormously proud that when the crunch came I chose principle and stuck to it, even with a knife at my throat. Not sure what that contributes to the discussion, but I'm not traumatised anyway. Oh, and I'm male too - I also didn't beat the shit out of him on principle :) [/OT-ish]

In "Curious George: Best blog font?"

My vote is use either "Sans" or "Sans Serif" and let the user's browser settings deal with it. That way everyone gets to see it in their own "best" font. I'm all for that.

In "The Golden Jubilee of Tiddlywinks is here!"

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. hootenanny Nice links though, cheers.

In "I want to work for Huh?®"

Ah, that's brilliant fun, and bang on. Thanks Nostril!

In "The Opening Chord to "A Hard Day's Night" Revealed!"

Terrific link! I love the chord but really couldn't care less how they did it. However, it pleases me enormously that someone, somewhere cares in such a delightfully focussed manner. The internet really belongs to people like this and their millions of virtual sub-netwoks.

In "Weegee the Famous"

Some great photographs.I was enjoying them too, until I got to this one and it's associated comments. Getting some poor woman pissed then propping her up so he could get his "poignant" picture? Stuff that. For me the photographer for this kind of work should be just an eye and a memory. You comment by what and how you shoot, not by taking advantage like this. I went off the guy immediately.

In "Curious George: Quality Sound"

I have a small music server hooked straight into my hifi here, using a different M-Audio card to the ones mentioned above, the 24/96. The sound is quality is excellent, and the RCA phono outputs (exactly the same as any other audio component in your stack) makes it simple to connect to any amp/speakers combo. You might also want to consider hanging on to your desktop machine and using that for playing music, just controlling it from the laptop. That is what I have done and it works very well indeed. The first one was stuck in an old PlayStation 2 case [self link] to hide it away, but it was limited space-wise, so now I use a more conventional box with the soundcard mentioned above. This is controlled through any web browser, so you can choose and play music from anything on the network. Quality and flexibility - I love it. It would also have the benefit of finding a use for the old machine when you upgrade.

In "Top 1000"

What an interesting list, thank you. I'd never have guessed Dante in the top five.

In "Warning: will destroy your mind"

Astounding, thank you.

In "What are the tax rates for marijuana?"

When I first saw this (maybe a month ago) I thought "Oh, those crazy Americans!". However it seems far less entertaining now that senior Police are asking the government to tax drug dealers over here in Airstrip One.

In "The Grateful, and Sexy Dead"

Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Yes, both of them :)

In "Curious George: Favorite Online Cartoons"

Goats and Lore Brand are both great, and if you fancy something a little different, Slow Wave is remarkable. People send their dreams to Jesse Reklaw and he makes comics of them. Amazing stuff.

In "Infocom Text Adventures Online"

Yeah, I know I'm late to the thread yet again, but here: list of downloadable games and the interpreters you need to play 'em on pretty much any machine you might have lying about. Oh, unless you want to use a Zaurus (like me); then you'll need this one which hasn't made the list.
