Yabusame. Mounted archery then and mounted archery now. Lots 'o links.

Art, history and a chance to practice with a virtual target. What more could you ask for? Unless you want to try the real thing.

  • Did I mention the way cool T-shirts?
  • Great post, GramMa! It must be incredibly difficult to accurately fire a bow from galloping horse. The horses in many of the the paintings seem smaller but more muscular and compact than western horses. I wonder if they're a particular breed or is it just the painter's style? And yeah, the T-shirts are way cool.
  • ))) !!!
  • A well-known school of yabusame is the famous Ogasawara Ryu, which is also one of the main schools of etiquette (Ogasawara Ryu reihou). You don't see much of it nowadays, and training is very scarce (nearly only in Japan). Another nice picture, and a short clip with a short informational text. A Nice page with some more info, pictures and links. It's a really interesting art, but I'm actually more interested in the etiquette part of the ryu, strange as it may seem.
  • Da coolness!
  • Lovely post, thanks. Bow-shaped bananas for GramMa!
  • "When the child of God descending overlooking doing, him the road it guided Sarutahiko no Kami. That nose was long, the back was high, the mouth shone, the eye shone and had shone at like the big mirror." He's like Gandalf on horseback! I actually was lucky enough to see a demonstration of yabusame by Japanese specialists on tour in London. They were using British horses from a stable that trains horses for film and TV, and still managed to hit and shatter at least 2 of the 3 targets every time. The announcer told us that one of the archers was nicknamed "Tom Cruise" for his resemblance to the actor. (He was the one who consistently shot 3 out of 3.)
  • Thanks for posting the additional links, Splice. I wanted to link to a lot more, but I wasn't sure if anyone would be that interested. The clip was great. The art is fascinating in and of itself, but the fact that it depicts real warriors is amazing to me. Interesting that there are a few paintings of modern horsemen, also. For me, the etiquette and tradition are what elevates this from a hangover from obsolete warfare and a sport to an actual artform. Athena, you have no idea. I am SOOOOOO jealous!
