Favourite Things... What are a few of your favourite things?

I'm feeling sad. What are some nice things?

  • Ok, I'll go first, I suppose: Ketches; a nice cup of tea on a rainy day; reading scary stories, then hiding under the blankets with somebody warm.
  • Whiskers on kittens, and lots of other stuff. Cheer up, little camper!
  • Dancing Lemurs.
  • Raindrops on roses... being consumed by FIRE! Whiskers on kittens... getting BLOWN UP! Bright copper kettles... crushed by a MONSTER TRUCK! Warm woolen mittens... on ZOMBIES! Brown paper packages tied up with string... burning as they plummet through the atmosphere of Aldebaran Prime whilst being SHOT AT WITH LASERS BY ALIEN KILLER ROBOTS!
  • Damn, you'd already got those brown paper packages. Have this one instead...
  • REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL: PART 3!!!!! The song by Ian Dury and the Blockheads.
  • REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL: PART 3!!!!! The song by Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

  • Afternoon thunderstorms in Fla.
  • A couple of my favorite tings.
  • Paging Misery and Company dept. I just lost my girlfriend of three years (um, she's alive, just doesn't want to live with me) and I'm more than a little down. Friends (including every single member of my band) and family have offered so much support, so all of those are favourite things. But off the top of my head: thunderstorms, sushi, red wine, real ale, rolling my point before rolling seven, music, hot sauce, my cats, a winding road, flying, sailing, hitting triple twenty in cricket, hitting one straight down the fairway 270 yards on the first hole, waking up thinking it must be nearly time to get up and seeing the clock say something like 3am, snow, clean sheets, spotting a beautiful woman and having her spot you and raise the eyebrows ever so slightly, sunspots, sharks that spot you and don't care. That'll do.
  • the poopsadaisy.
  • Sunflowers. Puppies. Art. Babies. Clean kitchens in the early morning with the coffeemaker going and you're not hungover but you still had a really great time last night. Evening just as everything starts to turn dark blue and the moon is a crescent not quite half and the light breeze blows through your hair. Libraries. Sailboats. The ocean. Flickr. And beer. And friends who suddenly give you flickr pro accounts yay!!! And monkeyfilter. And metachat. Dude. I've been unemployed for four weeks now, and I have accomplished precisely nothing and I think it may just have been the best four weeks of my life. It's all in the mix.
  • I love having a dream about a friend that I have not seen in years and waking up with such a vivid image in my mind from the dream that I feel like I actually just visited with the friend.
  • That feeling when you wake up and think it's a workday then remember it's only Sunday and you get to sleep in again. Also those really bright autumn days when the sky is brilliant blue and there are a few fluffy clouds, but it's actually cold and windy out.
  • Love, friendship, nature, meditation, music.
  • Playing at making sushi. Growing own veggies. Peeking around corners at cats, to make them 'tag' me. Sleeping snuggled up to somebody sweet. The mute button. The snooze button. Classical music with the shower. Cheer up Dreadnought!
  • Warm breezy summer nights. Reading the Sunday paper in bed. The first cup of coffee in the morning. Getting a surprise package in the mail. Bookstore cats. Fresh-baked bread. Exploring hidden alleys. Someone I love squeezing my hand when we're walking. Reading the funny parts out loud. Peach juice dribbling down my chin. Walking barefoot on grass. The feel of my hair swishing across my back. Blueberries. Praise from strangers. Wearing a borrowed shirt that still smells like its owner. Napping in the shade on a hot day. Music from an open window.
  • Wow. What timing. I just went to the wedding of a great couple, and the gift my fiance and I gave was 'A few of our favorite things'. This included a couple of kinds of sake, the EXP syrah that is cheap at Costco but oh so good, four discs of cool music, nifty molded glass coasters, the kind of roasted salted seaweed that I love, coconut muffin mix, Sharffen Berger cacao nibs (great in salads and ice cream alike), and a couple of other things I can't remember right now. The thing that is my favoritest that we couldn't give as a gift is koi. Didn't used to care for fish outside of sushi, but now that I have them, I find them fascinating.
  • The little striped cat purring in my lap right now. The same little cat when he brings me his feather toy damn it little man it's midnight I gotta sleep now. The scent of a ponderosa pine in summer. Singing Rhinemaidens.
  • Unicorns and rainbows, bitches. Unicorns and rainbows. ;) Actually: I thought this was a really charming post and just wanted to say so. (And in answer to your question, I like books almost as much as I like sleep.)
  • A nice grilled sandwich. Cookies warm from the oven with milk. OS X My table saw with Biesemeyer fence Severe thunderstorms My Mont Blanc rollerball I found in a thrift store for $1 The movie: Moonstruck A fresh copy of the New Yorker in the mailbox.
  • A quiet evening, enjoying a movie, in good company Good food Cold evenings; a thick, warm coat The sun, warming up my skin The elusive pleasure of a job well done, a new solution to an old problem The trust and companionship of close friends Memories Possibilities Coffee gelatin & vanilla ice cream The initial, awkward moment of hesitation That second when the brain shuts off
  • tinkering with computers. a good movie that few people know about. looking at the sky through tree branches. books that give you a worldview. books that destroy your worldview. sex. getting high. trippin..!!(with or without added chems) bicycling. yoga. good food. (this is higher in the list than it appears.)
  • Oh... and those odd, strange coincidences.
  • I like to give change to children when I`m depressed, but I'm usually so poor I don`t even have change. I try to give a small part of my monthly SSI to poor people. I know it sounds stupid, but when I had nothing, even a small amount meant something to me, and I would rather know that anything I give to a charible cause, the whole amount went to that, instead of some bureaucratic organization. Poor children are particularly unknowingly desperate. Oh, why am I even posting this???
  • Hugs. I like hugs. Don't get enough of them, as Chinese are less inclined towards physical affection. Hope you feel better, Dreadnought, retank (^_^)
  • Friends. Really good friends who help you get through the worst times. Today my friends are helping me move into a new place. They helped me through the whole nightmare of separation and divorce, offering company, food and drink, vehicles, places to stay. They make me laugh when I'm bawling my eyes out. And now they're prepared to help me move my crap. Friends are the best favorite things ever. Hope everyone feels better soon.
  • Oh dear. *hugs shinything* I'm sorry.
  • My long suffering wife Robots and spaceships Science Fiction Good food Hot, hot, hot spicy food & curries Good pilsner style beer Good whiskey Marijuana Mangoes Mushrooms, both magic & standard A stack of clean, white A4 paper just begging to be written upon with an old style typewriter Old style typewriters Deadwood A wooded glade Birds doing birdy things Friendly cats Communing with nature Books Quirky movies Lucid dreaming Thinking outside the box Screwing Life, undiluted
  • Thanks Alnedra. *hugs right back*
  • Raw, local honey. (and unpastureized juice!) Home made beer (when it turns out properly.) That ozone smell that precedes rain in the desert.
  • Air-conditioning. Driving. The Internet. Friends. A good vodka. Money. Sitting outside (under a roof or such) during a rainstorm.
  • Fraulein Maria, tied up in string. Just kidding. Sunlight on thin green leaves. Books. Old books. Old musty bookstores that are huge and rambling and smell slightly of old cat. Local honey also ranks up there. Aquaria, preferably those with sea otters and octopodes, like the one in Brooklyn. Beating a mission in GTA. Tea. Scones. Beating a level in any video game, really. All of Katamari Damacy. Being able to log into Urban Dead again.
  • Old musty bookstores that are huge and rambling and smell slightly of old cat. Oooh...I lurve. Just love walking into teeny tiny bookshops and smelling old books.
  • Going out to the pasture on a hot summer's day and smelling the skin of a horse that has been eating grass. Standing in the horse shed on a winter's day watching the snow fall and feeding a bucket of oats, then breathing the crisp air and smelling oats on the horse's breath. Fresh tomatoes warm off the vine. Fresh picked corn on the cob. Cherries. Grapes. The smell of a new baby, puppy, kitten. The smell and feel of clean sheets dried outside. The moment before you fall asleep. Shooting stars. Morning sunrise over the mountains. Afternoon sunshine thru trees. Connecting to MonkeyFilter and reading funny comments from my MonkeyFriends.
  • My boyfriend. Going grocery shopping and going into the aisle that holds bread and coffee...the smell is just amazing. The taste of a cold soda. Being outside in the eveningtime after it's rained. Watching a thunderstorm. Staying up all night and finally crawling into bed and going to sleep at the crack of dawn. Falling asleep to Boards of Canada. My cat. Seeing a movie that made such an impression on you that you think about it hours after you've watched it. Making collages. Getting all the Christmas stuff out and decorating the tree. Chinese food. Naps. Listening to music in my headphones during a car ride. Kittens and puppies. Daydreaming. Walking out to my dad's small garden every day and seeing if any of the tomatoes, green peppers or cucumbers are ripe yet. Candy... especially taffies and suckers. Thinking about my childhood. The feeling of getting into a clean, freshly made bed. The smell of freshly cut grass. The smell and feel of springtime. Gosh... I was feeling like crap but writing this made me feel better. :-)
  • Also, sun on a cat's belly. This one's for Dredd-0, OneOliveShort, shinything, and any other unhappy critters out there.
  • That is one pretty kitty. Pictures of cats are always nice.
  • My hubby, books, chilly fall days, snowy days where you're stuck inside the house and can't go anywhere, naps, freshly baked bread, good coffee, good tea, bookstores, my thick fluffy robe, really good ice cream, Christmas lights in a snowfall, office supplies (yes, I get excited over brightly colored sticky notes, nice pens, and colored paper clips), air conditioning.
  • not to derail.. but I think that cats can show contentedness much better than dogs... I've owned both, and when a cat is content... IMHO... I guess it's because it's such the dichotomy between their aloofness and the emotions that I percieve they feel... Not to hate on dog owners... I love both... but there really is nothing like a happy cat in the sun that's comparable to an experience I've had with a dog....
  • Playing through chess games by Alekhine, Nigel Short or Mikhail Tal. Listening to Miles Davis, Beethoven or Edgar Winter Watching Derren Brown perform card tricks. OK, I'm a pathetic nerd and I'm proud of it!
  • Thank you, goetter, and much needed. The moggies are taking good care of me.
  • Long motorcycle rides and the scent of New Mexico sage in my helmet. Friends. My cats stretching out. Moments that reinforce the fact that you can do what you're trying to do, just as you begin doubting yourself. Late nights at the Safehouse coffee bar drinking tea and laughing with friends. Waking up with my wife in the morning, latching onto each other, and falling back asleep. Finding old friends. A cold Dublin Dr. Pepper. Learning a new trick in Photoshop. Colorado.
  • hitting triple twenty in cricket What mean this?
  • Wow, goetter - that is one fine-looking cat belly! I just want to tickle it!
  • ...a few of your favorite things? wonders how few is a few?* Us, monkeys...or I wouldn't be here. =3,094. Feel I may have exceeded my quota now.
  • =3,904. Or something like that
  • I just have to say, everyone, that this thread made me feel so much better. Thanks, everyone.
  • Hey Monkeys! How about: playful dolphins racing along side the sailboat on a beautiful autumn day. watching those sweet hummingbirds feed. upstate New York (Hudson Valley) walking down a country road with the leaves just beginning to turn and just a nip of frost in the air with church bells ringing in the distance. fresh baked french bread Irish whiskey Golden garlic crabs good manners summer flip flops the fist day of spring easter baskets old books blueberry pie a la mode going to the fair moonlight walks I could go on and on... Thanks for the lift and putting a smile back on my face today all you wonderful monkeys!
  • To avoid repeating most of what's been said earlier, I'd have to say memories. There are so many special times in my life, and I can "be there" again when I remember them. Autumn on the east coast of the US. A month of wandering through Greece in the '80s. Getting into trouble with friends from years ago. Memories of my daughter when she was growing up. Loving the sparks of intelligent conversation when I was in college. The smell of orange blossoms when I was in high school in a town surrounded by hundreds of acres of orchards. Those moments don't have to happen again, because I can still "be there."
  • Old copies of the Reader's Digest ;) Hitting triple twenty in cricket is more or less the same thing as a boundary in darts, I'm guessing.
  • meeeeeeeeemorieeeeeeeeees light the corner of maaaaaaaa... /lynched
  • wolof, Plegmund, yes: Triple twenty in darts (the game of Cricket) - it's the small inner ring boundry in the 20 "column" and is worth 60 points, hence the name.
  • Chy, I love it when youy sing to me!
  • the fist day of spring Bwa-ha-ha! The mind boggles.
  • you know, fish, I WASN'T gonna say anything....
  • The monkey mind boggled The Doors of Doom opened The devil felt his horns And found they had been swoggled
