Some proposed Space Rescue systems. My favorite system is the MOOSE, which allows a single astronaut to bail out in space, fire a rocket to head towards Earth, and survive re-entry in a foam cocoon!

Anus-clenching adventure! Sorta reminds me of the end of John Carpenter's Dark Star: Hey, Talby! ... I think I've figured out a way!

  • Dammit, un-! You're making us all look bad. Another great post! Are you by chance, slowly doling out a few years' worth of top-notch bookmarks?
  • doling out a few years' worth of top-notch bookmarks? Not really bookmarks, per se. I don't really use bookmarks much. It's just some stuff I've seen over the years that I found interesting. I try to search mofi and mefi and some other places before posting so even if the info isn't fresh, it may still be new to most. I hopes.
  • Yay, un-!!! Nice going.
  • Damn nice FPP, again un-. Mention of this and Dark Star reminds me of a "serious" B-space movie I saw as a kid where the protagonist ends the whole shebang by don a space suit and surf boarding (maybe on a piece of jettisoned debris?) in to the sun... anyone got a title for me?
  • Go un-! I remember reading about MOOSE as a kid and just falling in love with the idea of using it. The only downside about it was that you'd be facing backwards all the way down, which would detract from the whole "falling from space down to earth" experience. And yeah, you're making the rest of us look bad so quit it. I keed! I keed!
  • (Spoiler Alert) where the protagonist ends the whole shebang by don a space suit and surf boarding (maybe on a piece of jettisoned debris?) in to the sun... anyone got a title for me? That's not Dark Star? When Doolittle surfs into the atmosphere of the big planet on some debris from their ship? What a great movie :)
  • Cool! I was wondering, just after I posted that, if that wasn't in fact it! Thanks! I just put that on reserve at the local bibliotec :)
  • God... what's with the whole un- dick sucking.... not saying the posts aren't good, but come on... do we need an official award everytime someone posts something worthwhile?
  • Sure, why not? -- posters need appreciative feedback. I woz just pondering this cocoon notion -- might be a lot more fun if it was chocolate-flavoured foam...becoz I really don't want to go careening through space in a cocoon unless there is some assurance I will enjoy the trip... Or hatch into a chocolate-smeared butterfly.
  • So I finished rewatching Dark Star this weekend. What a seriously great movie. The story and script, although presented straight-faced, wouldn't work nearly as well if it was not truly a comedy at heart. The first time I saw this movie, I was probably 10 years old. I started watch at about the time they go to visit Commander Powell (in deep freeze) for console. The idea of them "talking" to Powell in his state, and the fact that they were out of ideas.. man.. that scene stayed with me for decades :) The action from then on was just as riveting. I had forgotten about the dialog with bomb #20 until rewatching it.. just so much fun! The ending was very memorable for me. The way they deal with their demise, accepting it so nonchalantly, really ties the whole movie's philosophy together. I give it a big thumbs up, at least for my own nostalgia.
  • So who pissed in your Cheerios this morning, Debaser? I don't see un official Monkey award anywhere in this thread yet. da dada dun dun daDAAAAA! Here you go un- )))))))))))))))
