Why Coffee Works - Including a charming picture of a rat and a lead on the cause of insomnia (god I hope they fix that).
  • I heard that Mrs. Olsen was a coffee nympho. Two cups and you could bend her over the nearest hotpot. No, seriously, monkiously, I`ve always been curious of heath benefits of the coffee bean since beans are of such nutritious value, then it would seem that daily intake of a drink from them would certainly be a valuably asset to ones diet. But you never hear anything like that, all you ever hear is about their caffeine content. I`m a person who coffee actually helps me sleep. And what`s that black rat doing in that pic?
  • It's not a black rat, it's a Norway Rat. I think it's been nuzzling around in its litter looking for food, thus the comical pile of stuff on its dear little head. Unfortunately, it is probably dead by now, having been cut up for testing. Coffee helps me sleep too. This happens in some people who have non-neurotypical brains. So you might be a little ADD, ADHD, Asperger's or something similar. You might carry the Tay-Sachs Ashkenazim gene. Either that or you have become used to the caffeine dosage. :_)
  • Cute rat; I had them as pets when I was a kid. Coffee has always helped me to sleep and I've often wondered what that was about. I'll have to look into that "non-neurotypical brains" thing. Sounds interesting. I was misdiagnosed as mildly autistic as a kid.
  • Well there you go. That would be it. (I have Asperger's, btw).
  • Did some Asperger's googling just now and the characteristics are spookily familar to me. *gulp*
  • Beautiful plumage, the Norwegian Wistar.
  • Tay-Sachs apparently bestows a few extra IQ points, but to me that's a crappy way to take the edge off while they lock you in the rubber room.
  • Alright, two questions, what's Wistar and who's mrs Olsen?
  • Wistar is the name of that type of rat, wot pines for the fjords. I'm guessing Mrs. O is from a U.S. sitcom.
  • Wistar's a lab in the US that developed strains of lab rats. Think I rwecall Mrs Olsen was some character in TV commercials a while ago.
  • Unless they mean of the Olsen twins, who are two of the worst child actors I have seen.
  • = mother of
  • Thankee. Wistar, eh? I shall add that to my brainbox.
  • Yep- That one was Bertie Wistar, methinks.
  • No Jeeves? Or would it be Cheeves?
  • No Aunt Agatha, neither. Tut.
  • She was the coffee commercial queen for Folgers. And, I might as well throw into this, Abigail Anne Folger, heiress to the Folgers fortune, was victim to the (Charles) Manson murders.
  • Har! Seems Mrs. Olsen hails from Stanton, Iowa, "The Little White City".
  • I have it on good report that the cute ratty was not cut up for testing. Unfortunately, it IS dead. Too much caffeine. Jittered to death. I'm working the 10pm to 6am shift on weekends. Guess when everything in the hospital shuts down--1am to 4am. Just when you reaally need a cuppa joe. Barstards.
  • Bluehorse: get a French press. and take some good ground coffee with you.
  • Barstards. Alcoholics with Downs Syndrome?
  • yon charming black rat wears a wood-shaving hat which is now all the rage amongst rats who are caged
  • --reminds me of an experiment i was suggested by a doc who was working off Harvard reports on inositol-- (turned out ridiculously with the sheer amount of powder ingestion involved) now what happened to homunculus? i was hoping he saved that times article from earlier in the month on hippocampus developement in cabbies and Tibetan monks-- pardon, i'm already very late for something and lack coffee oh yeah, and how does this effect Anthony Head as the Taster's Choice guy? And my first thought at seeing Mrs. Olsen was Little House on the Prairie, which was very disturbing--
  • --we could visit Mrs Olsen's House on the Prairie if we wanted to stay at a Bed and Breakfast on the Prairie but since we haven't made it to a cup of coffee yet nor set our stalking feet in someone's stream of consciousness-- -- which reminds me it's probably best it's probably best it's probably someweird if we only keep our eyes open we will see her and the prairie grasses tsller than our heads while we ride horsebavk through Kansas looking for Dorothy and Toto totally want a cip of coffee
  • I hope they do a study on how caffeine may or may not work differently when ingested in coffee or in tea. My pet peeve while working in Singapore was while sipping my cup of Chinese tea, and some well-meaning colleague would come by me and say,"Dear, don't drink tea, it'll keep you awake at night!" - enroute to making their third cup of coffee for the day. grumblegrumblegrumbledamncoffeedrinkersgrumblegrumblegrumble
  • Tea is the beverage of the criminal underclass and pirates. Coffee is for those who love only virtue.
  • Tea is the beverage of the criminal underclass and pirates You forgot "violent". *taps hammer thoughtfully*
  • >zhzhzhz! >my lightsabre is lit
  • Don't forget Alnedra, tea drinkers are genteel and refined whether violent or no. Remember to swing with your pinkie held out and step away to avoid those tacky blood spatters and brains. Bees, was that sip or cup or both? Path, I suppose a French Press would work for the coffee, but I wanted to take a walk as well.:( /too lazy to make coffee this morning
  • BlueHorse, in all candour I think it woz a typo.
  • My husband always drinks coffee before bed. Definately ADD or ADHD, not quite sure what the difference is. Oh man, nothing beats fresh ground coffee beans in a French Press, the very thought makes me drool.
  • I drink coffee before bed (well, I did until recently, but the kicking of the internal organs as a result put me off), but I am probably boringly neurotypical. I think I'm just accustomed to coffee, having drunk it almost exclusively since I was fifteen.
  • "..Definately ADD or ADHD, not quite sure what the difference is..." Hyperactivity is the thing with the H. Does he have restless leg syndrome? Wiggle his foot before falling asleep? Run about like a mad bugger? ADD/ADHD manifests differently in adults, often because the individual has learned coping mechanisms or ways to hide the symptoms. Many adult ADD/ADHD people 'self medicate' in one way or another, either thru' drugs/alcohol or other things, even driving fast (to get an adrenaline high) or other such risk-taking, pot-smoking, meth-huffing, etc. (speed affects ADHD peeps quite differently) Coffee does indeed kick start the digestive organs, and is a superb emetic particularly 'proper' strong coffee, which is why we find ourselves running to the lavatory after a good strong cup.
  • He's smokes a lot of weed, if he didn't he'd be in constant motion. Foot tapping, restless like a madman, so yeah, coffee, pot, beer.....whatever works. I guess it would be ADHD. Thanks, Chy.
  • Hey, can you send me some weed, Darsh???? PLEASE? I'm desperate. :D
  • So Darshon is the supplier now? HEY GUYS! PARTY! Bring on the cockpunch and poptarts.
  • Don't bother with the BongWater, we'll make our own.
