Curious George, Westminster! Any dog lovers out there watch the Academy Awards of the canine world Monday and Tuesday nights? Sweetie and I flew up to see it in person. Coolest detail: They hawk champagne in the stands! Guys come around yelling, CHAMPAGNE! CHAMPAGNE! and offer up little plastic glassesful. Heh. How very... Westminster.
  • I caught the end of it, as I had rehearsal all night. Even though I knew which dog would win Best In Show, I was still rooting for the terrier, on account of it being unbelievably cute.
  • That's awesome, Side Dish! I'm jealous! I was rooting for the Border Collie in the herding group, I was thinking the Bloodhound that won Best In Show in Portland would win. Have Pekingnese always looked like Tribbles or was that one groomed especially...poofy?
  • zira, my sweetie said the same EXACT thing. we were at home watching on TV the first night and one of the commentators said something about the peke and it's "wobbling walk." oh no, the other commentator said, "we don't say wobbling. we call that a `rolling gait.' " nope, that's a wobbling tribble if i ever saw one!
  • My girlfriend and I made sound effects for it when it wobbled. I am all about the onomatopoeia, but my skills are not good enough for the noise we made, though.
  • Didn't they have a new kind of dog this year? My mom was saying something about that...
  • Damn! I missed it! That's what I get for ignoring the tv in favor of City of Heroes.
  • js, there were three newly accepted breeds: neapolitan mastiff ("isn't that an ice cream?" sweetie asked), the Glenn of Imaal Terrier and the Black Russian Terrier ("isn't that a drink?" someone, somewhere, asked).
  • oh and here's what they say about the pekingese's walk: "The gait is unhurried and dignified, with a slight roll over the shoulders." oh is THAT what it is.
  • The border collie was a dog. The pointer was a dog. The Great Pyrenees and the Bloodhound were a D-A-W-G-s. The peke was not a dog. It was a tribble. *displays bias for large dogs, doesn't care*
  • Offtopic, but: I like big dogs too - ones that look like wolves! I actually tried to enter wolof in a dog show once but they said he was spelled all wrong. Then he bit me and I passed out but now I'm OK.
  • To clarify, the neapolitan mastiff and the Glen of Imaal terrier are only new *to the AKC*. They're both old breeds; they just hadn't had a large enough presence in the US to gain entry into the AKC, or their breed clubs didn't want in. The Black Russian terrier, OTOH, is a new breed, which started being created in WW2 as a protection/guard/eat-the-dissidents dog.
  • ah, a true dog person! thank you Xeny. i'm quite the novice at this dog-show stuff.
  • nope, that's a wobbling tribble if i ever saw one! Grannies knit these to hide kleenex in.
  • It's my bride who's the real dog person. I play the role of Long-Suffering Husband, complete with carrying a whole pile of stuff around.
  • I actually tried to enter wolof in a dog show once I think the quid is OK, but I don't particularly want him entering me. The biting stuff was just a friendly reminder.
  • I like to watch the dog shows, too. The dogs are just gorgeous. Though I would like to have a dog show for the mutts, and give them some love, too :) That's probably just so my dog Steve the Chug (half chihuahua, half pug) could win.
