2 days 17 hours until Ellen Macarthur breaks the solo round-the-world non-stop multihull sailing record. A national hero in the UK, worshipped in France, she's gone 26,933 miles as I type this. Here's the live data from the boat. Go! Go!
  • When you meet your life's love -- and for herself it seems to be sailing -- go for it! Best of luck to ye, Ellen Macarthur!
  • Go Ellen!
  • Woah, sounds like fun. I could never sail for more than a few days.
  • ...And all she asks is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.
  • Full respect is due to the woman ... GO ELLEN!
  • Go Ellen! Go Ellen! She's great, absolutely great. I love the way she seems to have redefined this type of heroic, individual endurance feat; being openly emotional about it, willing to display weakness and her fears, as opposed to the standard steely, blank determination that most male adventurers seem to favour. I was just staying at my parents house in Cornwall this past week - it was with great regret that I had to return to London, because I'd have loved to go down to Falmouth to welcome her into harbour when she gets back on Tuesday or Wednesday. It'll be quite a reception, I imagine...
  • Woo hoo! Go Ellen go! A magnificent accomplishment.
  • Wasn't the round the world record recently broken by an Indonesian clinging to a piece of driftwood? Too soon?
  • No. Perfectly timed.
  • I think that her Majesty should run down to the dock and knight Ellen with the same sword used by good Queen Bess to knight Sir Francis Drake way back in 1973 or whatever. AND she should wear the same underpants on her head that Lizzie 1 wore on that momentous day. That'll show them damn yankees that BRITAINNIA rules the waves.
  • )))
  • Yay! Oh, hell, have a few more exclamation marks. You deserve them!!!!!
  • The Guardian indulges in the fine old British sport of pissing in the victory champagne. Ur-communitarian instincts compel us to hack away at the tall poppies.
  • I guess I'm the only monkey on the spot, so I best be off down to the harbour.
  • O excellent, Ellen!!!
  • I just like the headline on this one: British welcome home Dame Ellen of the Seas.
  • I'm a bit upset she didn't get knighted immediately with the same sword etc etc. Maybe this will happen - one approves of such traditions so.
  • Also I kinda think Ellen looks really hot in that sailsuit thingy outfit. Sorry.
  • She's one helluva dame.
  • I saw the news today reporting about her. Very touched, and very impressed. She's one strong woman, all the way through.
