Curious George wants a ‘nana. What did you eat as a child that you never eat now? MI

I used to eat ketchup sandwiches. I also used to eat Onion sandwiches. I don’t now.

  • Orange crush and faygo red pop are both stomach turningly sweet to me now.
  • Soap.
  • Meat.
  • Soapy Meat.
  • Milk. Have you *seen* where it comes from??
  • Paper. Once ate 5 entire 8.5x11 sheets on a dare. Didn't feel to good afterwords... As far as food is concerned, I'd have to say Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. I don't have an aversion to them, and I will occasionally eat one every decade or so and thoroughly enjoy it, but I don't ever make them for myself.
  • Orange soda were a favorite for me, too, that I can't stand now. I also used to adore any kind of sweets, which I don't eat hardly at all anymore. Not quite on topic, but you made me remember: my Grandma used to keep Velamints for me whenever my mom & I would visit. I don't know that I've ever bought them myself, but every know & then I happen to be offered one. Every time, it takes me back to sitting around the kitchen table, drinking instant coffee with Mom & Grandma, talking about the sorry state of the world.
  • *gah! too (sorry for the needless correction, but I just hate that common misspelling...)
  • fried baloney sandwiches. in retrospect, the very idea is more than a little appalling.
  • I've been a po-faced vegan for nearly twenty years now, so the full list would be quite long. I do remember enjoying Bird's Angel Delight (kind of packaged pudding if that's too specifically British). You could excavate and sculpt it with your spoon as you ate, and in came in those fantastic day-glo colours that are surely banned on health grounds these days. On the upside I've added booze and fags to my repetoire.
  • I had a babysitter who would feed us ketchup baloney roll-ups. A slice of baloney, a squirt of ketchup, rolled up. *shudder* and I LOVED them.
  • When I was a kid, my dad made our lunches for school. I'll never forget the day I discovered two pieces of bread with two slices of Velveeta cheese, smeared with grape jelly. He was immensely proud of himself for thinking of something so original, and he made those sandwiches for us regularly. My sister & I ate them, and I remember liking them back then. But I haven't eaten a cheese and jelly sandwich since I was 12.
  • I used to eat sour pickles and peanuts for breakfast. OK, so I was a weird monkeylet.
  • As a wee lad, I would go to the fridge, open up the butter dish, and start gnawing away at a stick of butter. Usually, I would finish most of it before my mom would catch me. Although I still like butter today, I prefer to enjoy it more in moderation.
  • actually jay, a peanut butter and pickle sandwich is quite good...
  • ketchup sandwiches on Wonder Bread--gack! and white school paste (hmmm, I could get hungry for some paste)
  • Crayons. Once I realized what "non-toxic" meant I would eat crayons during recess to gross out all the girls and then spit multi-colored, flecked wax spitballs at them. And we also snorted Pixie-Stix for the interesting snot when we would blow our noses upon returning to class. Hurt like hell. And I do neither now.
  • "And I do neither now" - I bet chicks would dig that now.
  • That's what you say. I don't eat snot anymore.
  • Anything Chef Boyardee related will never be ingested again. Name That Itch - I did the same thing. I think it was because my parents insisted on using margarine for the most part, so anytime I could get my hands on real butter, I'd go nuts.
  • Mayonnaise sandwiches, sugar packets (the whole packet), those disgusting chewy cookies they used to make that tasted like chemicals, my mom's diet soda. I also used to swallow my gum.
  • Maybe the Pixie-Stix would work for *certain* women... but I am not sure I want to meet them. I imagine something of a cross between Cos Players and goth-y, deluded vampires. Actually, now that I think about it...
  • Creme Horns. These were icing filled pastries. I tried one a few years ago, and rather than being devine, they were heavy and greasy, and made me feel sick. I could eat a package of three when I was young.
  • Rocky mountain oysters. For real. I think I was three.
  • For parentally-prepared food: Dutch pea soup, Belgian endive, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, fish on Fridays. For self-prepared food: homemade ginger ale (half coke, half seven-up), Corn Flakes in apple juice, ice cream liquified by incessant stirring.
  • marroni and chesse.....me and space kitty (my mom ) ate way too much of this chili cheetoes with lucas chili powder on them the color orange from my scented crayon box just a small bite to test the non toxicity of crayolas. needless to say not lethal but certainly long lasting retardation/personality effects :)
  • Grape Kool-Aid mixed with dry non-dairy creamer.
  • I was an insanely picky eater as a child, so it works mostly the other way around. But I've lost my taste for McDonald's hamburgers - not on moral grounds, I just don't care for them anymore - which, as my relatives never tire of telling me, used to be my favorite food in the world. (This is when I was a skinny, tall child. I'm neither now. Hmmmm.) And I may have to second Chef Boyardee, even though I ate it occasionally up through college. I haven't bought any of that since I got my own apartment, and I don't think I would like it much now. Macaroni and cheese, however... that I'll keep.
  • Motzah-rella sticks and Lox Rox. The kosher aisle was all we ate. We were not jewish.
  • Now that I think about it, I think I have to third that Chef Boyardee thing (and Franco-American) those things are absolute shite. Spaghetti-O's my arse...
  • weinie beanies. ick. Now the only time I ever jones for a hot dog is when I'm someplace like a street fair where they are charging an exorbitant amount for them Mom's lame hamburger-instead-of-sausage on english muffins pizza Zotts. I still would eat Zotts but they are really hard to find
  • I used to be big on going to the fridge and grabbing a slice of Kraft cheese and eating it straight. gives me the horrors now, thinking about it.
  • Paste, as Bluehorse said, as well as glue, erasers, crayons, paper and dog food. Cheese Whiz and honey sandwiches (gah!) Purloined baking chocolate which I always got busted for. Screaming Yellow Zonkers.
  • Bread and butter with H-P sauce on top. Washed down with coca-cola. But I haven't drank coke in almost forty years now! I still use the H-P, but not for sandwiches.
  • I used to spit in my ice cream then stir it until it was liquid. *shudder* Also used to eat something like 3 cans of Campbell's Alphabet soup per day. My parents would buy crates of the stuff when it was on sale. Thank GOD I've moved on to more mature fare...now where did I put those ramen noodles...
  • islander, I'm glad you lived to tell the tale.
  • Spam. Yep. We used to eat fried Spam, often with Kraft mac&cheese. Neither will ever pass my lips again. That and anything that's mostly sugar. Neither my taste nor my teeth can handle that now.
  • I have to admit that I still eat Kraft Dinner (or, if you prefer, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese) on a fairly regular basis. As soon as I smell the oily cheese, I'm reminded why I have a job.
  • My Dad won one of these things as a door prize at some event or other when I was a kid. We tried it once. It basically electrocutes your weiners.
  • Capt Renault: But we would eat Kraft Dinner, we'll just eat more!
  • I no longer eat cake mix, or drink maple syrup straight from the bottle. I also haven't had balogna in well over 10 years.
  • Monkeyfilter: It basically electrocutes your weiners
  • Monkeyfilter: It basically electrocutes your wieners.
  • D'oh!
  • on review... ooga actually spelled it correctly
  • ...oh, right, hot dogs too. The only ones I can stand to eat now are Hebrew National, and only then by the sheer assumption that they pay attention to what goes into them. This may not be true. I don't know. I have this thing against organ meat, y'see.
  • D'oh!
  • You know, actually, as a kid I liked pretty much exactly what I like now. I hated "American" cheese slices. Loathsome, then and now. But I always loved strange foods, exotic foods, and expensive foods. Oh, and seafood. When I was three my favorite food was anything involving shrimp or scallops. I hated bologna and wouldn't eat Lunchables except for the crackers, to my mother's dismay when she thought she was getting me the "cool" lunch and spent more than she should have. My favorite school sandwich in the day was peanut butter with butter and honey - which is still a damn good sandwich. Then, as now, I preferred homemade macaroni and cheese but would eat the Kraft stuff (but the shape ones were and still are better. It's a texture thing. Don't ask). I adored spanakopita (spinach pie) from age 3 onward. A local restaurant made it then. Now, I do. I liked flatbreads and multigrain bread but not white bread. Same today. I liked dark chocolate, the darker the better, and nibbled on my mother's baking chocolate. Nowadays I nibble at my own. I still swallow my gum. I still enjoy McDonald's Chicken McNuggets with honey (BUT ONLY WITH HONEY), though not as much as when they still had dark meat. _____ Does all this make me very strange? It seems like everyone else's palate changed considerably. Was I the only person who determined what was good and what sucked at less than five years old?
  • My friend Sam ate nothing but cream cheese and jelly sandwiches for years, though. Sam is much weirder than I am.
  • Debaser626: That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! Ontopic: As a kid, would save up my allowance to buy A&W Coney Dogs on Coney Dog Tuesdays when they were cheap. I now stay away from hot dogs, much like Wurwilf, and A&Ws are practically nowhere to be found.
  • Breast milk.
  • ooga_booga, I beg to differ! Up in Wisconsin I saw a peculiar A&W/Long John Silver's hybrid. It was the best fucking thing I could possibly imagine.
  • musing... I'd have to second the preference for the McNuggets while they still had dark meat. Strangely enough, I hate dark meat in everything else except McNuggets... but I loved the dark nuggets... And besides the Chef Boyardee thing, my palate is pretty much the same... but unlike you, I'm not an adventurous eater. It's funny to hear how many people don't like bologna as adults... It's a favorite pasttime for me and the SO to eat bologna and potato chip sandwiches on lazy Sundays while watching Trading Spaces reruns.
  • oh... and bernockle wins...
  • My mother used to make egg rolls. But my sister wouldnt eat the ones made with cabbage and vegetables. So my mom would make some with ham and velveeta. Talk about bastardizing cuisine. I would never eat those now. But most everything else, yes. I still love Pixie Stix and grape soda and Chef Boyardee. Although I never liked mac and cheese.
  • actually kimdog.. that sounds pretty f-ing tasty! I think I'm going to try that... I would've never put the two together, but Eggroll wrapping with Ham and Cheddar (not a fan of Velveeta) fried up, sounds downright delectable to me... thanks!
  • Fruitella (sp?) fruit chews... it was (is?) a candy that was (is still?) available in Montreal when I was a kid, but I haven't had any since I was 8. I still don't get why black currant isn't a more popular flavor in the US; I LOVE it.
  • musingmelpomene: A&W *and* Long John Silver? Perhaps in today's world of Taco Bell/Pizza Hut/KFC triumvirates it doesn't seem so outre, but my mind still boggles at the "synergy effects" when the A&W Bear and Long John Silver get into bed together. There used to be an A&W down on the SF Peninsula but they seem to have gone the way of the dodo several years ago. Wienerschnitzels still abound, though.
  • you people were gross kids.
  • Shit.
  • (oh, and paper, plastic, wood, raw floor, raw pork)
  • My preschool teacher used to make us sandwiches. I don't remember what she made the other kids, but for some reason or another, she always made mine with nothing but margerine and Wonderbread. I loved them...
  • YES, I ATE THE FUCKING FLOOR!@# I meant flour, of course.
  • I'd sneak brown sugar straight from the box when I could get away with it. d'oh! Space Kitten logged into my account! /grateful I didn't know about the orange crayon earlier....
  • Trash.
  • (referring to what I ate, not space kitten)
  • I ate processed-food desserts a lot as a kid (Ding Dongs, Twinkies, Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls, etc.) and they just ick me now. That and Oreos, which I ate compulsively. I don't eat ketchup on everything any more. Particularly, I don't mix ketchup and brown gravy to eat with my chicken-friend steak. I still like fried Spam every now and then, though.
  • I'd sneak handfulls of white flour and eat it raw. I'd also eat hot dogs cold from the fridge.
  • I don't put sugar on my cornflakes or cheerios any more.
  • corn starch mixed with lime juice, stirred together as a beverage. Rich's non-dairy creamer/soy infant formula on cereal (thank beans for soymilk). my grandmother decided to be clever once and used some food coloring on it, making it a wan blue-grey color. couldn't stomach that. liverwurst. sardines from the tin. Steak'ums. burger-based fast food.
  • Oh, I finally thought of one more- Vienna Sausages, straight out of the can with the gelatinous aspic still clinging to them. Oh ick. And Debaser626 you are more than welcome to the ham and cheese eggroll recipe. It is such a great white trash sort of thing. And actually this thread inspired me to pick up some grape soda and Chef Boyardee for dinner. What can I say, it's been a fucking bad week.
  • Debaser: That's got to be one of the top ten tags, but don't forget these nice ones: MonkeyFilter: I don't eat snot anymore. MonkeyFilter: I prefer to enjoy it more in moderation. MonkeyFilter: I have this thing against organ meat. MonkeyFilter: Spaghetti-O's my arse... Debaser, why does goatse come to mind with this? Grape Kool-Aid mixed with dry non-dairy creamer. I used to spit in my ice cream then stir it until it was liquid. VeraGemini and Stray win in overall food-related grossness. My son was discovered sampling rabbit pellets under the bunny cages at age 3.
  • I had Chef Boyardee for lunch. First time in many years. That's what started all this.
  • Ha! There is two A & W's here that are drive-in and eat-in. [one only two years old] And more in the food courts in the mall. Population = 150,000 and I guess we are all die-hard papa-burger fans. I will ship coney fries by request.
  • Char Siew buns. I used to have them almost everyday as a child, then just stopped. Don't really care for them anymore. I still take stuff straight from the bottle/can/tub: Nutella, Milo, condensed milk, etc....
  • We have A&Ws up the yin-yang here in Winnipeg. /gloats
  • Wow, an actual honest-to-goodness A&W drive-through. If I scrounge up enough allowance money I might take you up on those fries, dxlifer.
  • Geez - A&Ws out the yin-yang. That's got to hurt. And Alnedra - I polished off a jar of Nutella the other week. Still working on my big vat of Milo, though. Bournvita was king of the powdered malt drinks in my opinion, although I was also fond of Horlicks. Yes, there is such an unfortunately-named beverage, to those of you sniggering in the corner.
  • Toast covered in butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Which I still eat when I bother to make breakfast. The only thing I don't eat anymore that I apparently loved as a kid is broccoli.
  • Argh! Here's the link to Horlicky etymology. And here's the link to corporate horlicky goodness. I certainly horlicksed up the link in my previous comment.
  • Porridge.
  • Peanut butter and mayo on white bread. Government cheese. Meow mix.
  • canned beets bologna american cheese slices miracle whip Every day for lunch, my mom would make me an american cheese sandwich with like an *inch* of miracle whip on it. When I got home from school, my grandfather would give me a bologna sandwich. I think I just reached my lifetime limit of them all.
  • Nilla wafers. My mom would have to hide the box because I would just eat those for every meal otherwise. I think I'd still like them, but now when I have cookies they are chocolate-oriented.
  • Sardines - forgot about those. The kind packed in ketchup. Use to be my favorite lunch, sardine sandwiches. I tried them again a few months ago. Uttergag.
  • Scallops. Won't eat any non-fish sea-animal now, they all creep me out for some reason. I mean, a scallop is barely an animal, lobsters are just big insects, and octopuses are smart enough to open jars. I'm boring at sushi bars. Mushrooms, again, a texture thing. The whole 'not a plant, not an animal' thing. I used to eat them when I was a vegetarian but the gills got to me. White bread/lunch meat. I got stuck eating this stuff at a dig in Missouri and, oh god, the ill. Didn't know you could get culture shock one time zone away.
  • I forgot I used to eat raw lemons. blagh!
  • Buttered bread sprinkled with sugar. Golden syrup on sandwiches. I still drink condensed milk, though.
  • Foods with gluten in them. I kinda miss that. Also, honey. I don't like it anymore, for no apparent reason. And american cheese.
  • Ketchup sandwiches. Jelly sandwiches. Mustard sandwiches. Cheese sandwiches. Bologna and mustard sandwiches. Hot dogs. (No more lips 'n' ass for me!) I liked sandwiches. Still do, but I avoid the monoculture kind.
  • You people ate scary sandwiches. For me not much has changed; mostly I don't touch the hyper-processed stuff, the Twinkies and Fruit Roll-Ups and CapriSuns and such, and I don't have the same tolerance for sweet that I used to.
  • Raw hotdogs straight from the fridge. I loved to drink oil and vinegar salad dressing. Braunsweiger Liverwurst. I must have been on fucking crack.
  • Straight BisQuik. Ick.
  • Ivy.
  • Potted meat, vienna sausages, candy bars, snack cakes, canned soup... although I now eat ramen, which I think of more as instant noodles and not soup and prefer the stuff from the Asian market, but I'd never heard of it as a kid. And dirt. Not that I remember, but my mom loves telling the story of seeing me eat dirt and deciding not to stop me because she felt it was good for my immune system!
  • Oh, and mayo sandwiches here as well. Blech.
  • I ate a water snail from a friend's garden pond once.
  • One Thanksgiving, when I was about 7, I got creative with sandwiches...my 2 favourite were mashed potato and mixed vegetable (from the can) nestled between 2 slices of white bread. My creative beverage concotion to wash it down was milk and orange juice. I think my taste buds have fully developed since then. Bleah!
  • Elio's pizza with Frosted Flakes sprinkled on top (emulating The Ninja Turtles) but I think maybe I'd eat that again. Also, my mom, (who practicly raised us on westerns, war movies, and Hitchcock) wouldn't let me have toy guns as a kid. As a result I remained so obsessed that I used to eat my sandwiches into the shape of guns (I guess just to look at them or maybe out of spite) until she finally caved in.
  • For breakfast, I used to eat canned sausage and rice. We'd dump the sausage in a pan and add some water to make this reddish-pink sauce that would go over the rice. It was delicious! But never read the list of ingredients on one of these cans -- stuff like tripe and liver and stomach and hearts.
  • Braunsweiger Liverwurst. moneyjane - you just brought me down memory lane. The Braunsweiger was a staple of any cross-country trip with my dad. Whichever parent wasn't driving would have the task of squirting the pasty liver goodness onto crackers and topping with a shot of easy cheese, then passing the concoction to the hungry kids in the back seats of the van. I still like liverwurst, but don't buy it often (my wife really can't stand it). Cotto salami and cheddar sandwiches, with way too much yellow mustard and the cheese sliced thick enough to choke you after two bites... another dad favorite in the van that I don't do any more. Dog biscuits (my uncle used to feed them to us as a joke). I have been known to eat a Milkbone just to make someone laugh though. Chocolate pudding pies - the Hostess ones with the pastry crust and the gooey sugary filling - I used to be able to eat them, but trying one now would likely put me in a diabetic coma after a bite or two. Way too much sugar for me these days. I think the last one I ate actually made me physically ill due to the sugar content. As for things I used to eat and then re-discovered - My mom used to make "Tamale pie". Basically a gooey mess of masa, tomatoes, cheese and olives. It looks like some sort of brown cheesy paste. She never had a written recipe, so after she died I couldn't re-create it. Ten full years later my sister happened to find the recipe - on the back of a bag of masa (!). As soon as I started mixing it up the smell hit me, and I was ravenously hungry; It's not the most amazing dish in the world but after 10 years I was really jonesing for some. My wife wasn't too thrilled with the paste at first, but has since grown to like it quite a bit. Now, if I can ever get my aunt to give up Grandpa's turkey stuffing recipe, I'll be in business...
  • This thread is an appetite killer like few others. whee. Also. Tang straight out of the jar. I usually drank it super-strong, but occasionally ate spoonfuls of the sugar-powder instead (or with a bit of water to make a clay/paste). Uh. I don't think I'll do that again. For a while I was fixated on drinking the vinegar from pickle jars. Yum? As for not being into Cool Food early on, I don't think I was exposed to it much. When you're a kid, you likely don't know about it unless it's given to you.
  • Oatmeal/porridge and Cream of Wheat. Loved it until one day I had to listen to my brother throwing up while I was eating a big, steaming bowl of it. Now I can't stand it (or most mushy foods, for that matter). Peanut butter/pickle and peanut butter/butter sandwiches. Haven't made either in, oh, maybe twenty years. I do still, however, enjoy a BLT on toast with mayo and peanut butter. YUM. There's also a place in Sedalia, MO called the Wheel-In Drive-In that makes the Guberburger, a hamburger with mayo, lettuce, tomato, and peanut butter. Double yum.
  • Johnny Hazard: I snorted Pixie Stix once -- in the parking lot of the mall no less -- in high school. We were trying to see if it would give a good sugar high, but all it did was hurt like hell. (ow. ow. ow.) The funny part of that was that, after I was writhing around on the parking lot in pain, a guy friend of mine snorted a bunch up, too. He figured that if a *girl* could do it, so could he! Wurwilf: Did the pickle juice make you lose your voice? A friend of mine used to drink straight vinegar to lose her voice so she wouldn't have to go to school. When I was 2, I ate an entire jar of dill pickles. (oh, the sickness...) My mom let me do it to teach me a lesson in self-control. All it really did was teach me not to eat dill pickles :)
  • I used to put butter on a saltine and use it like flypaper to catch flying insects out of the air. And then I'd eat 'em. I hardly ever do that anymore. Otherwise, I think I pretty much eat all the same stuff, to the extent it is still available. Mmmmm, what I'd give for a box of Space Food Sticks right about now.....
  • Braunsweiger--never again. But I'd love to have some Scrapple and REAL Polish Kielbasa--the homemade kind that smells HEAVENLY. For those who have never had Scrapple, it's a Pennsylvania Dutch meat pudding that comes in a solid brick, and you melt it down into fatty, unknown meaty pudding-like goodness, then allow the edges to turn brown. Eat with an over-easy egg. I'm sure it's horrible for you, but I'd love to try it again. Not so for Vienna sausages. We never had them in the house when I was a kid, and I lusted after them. The first time I ate them as an adult, I gagged. Mom knew best.
  • Caviar & bananas on toast. No, wait, that was yesterday.
  • My mom let me do it to teach me a lesson in self-control. All it really did was teach me not to eat dill pickles :) My mom let me do that with butter. Couldn't eat butter for years. I stil can't stand it if it's not melted into bread or something.
  • Vinegar never made me lose my voice, no, but then I don't think I've ever drunk a whole jar of it at once! ...I can't even walk by scrapple in the supermarket without shuddering. Which, I believe, is as it should be. (Isn't that one of the many lovely foods that begins by boiling a pig's head? I'll steer away from any recipe that begins with boiling a head.)
  • STP, you're kidding about the saltine/butter/fly thing. Right? Right? Please say yes.
  • I watched in horror as my daughter made a peanut-butter and liverwurst and sugar sandwich once. She was only five so I let her go for it and she said that it was quite good.
  • I used to eat raw nest pasta (as seen here) and raw macaroni noodles. And soggy graham crackers soaking in milk.
