The Georgia Guidestones are one of many Stonehenge clones in America. The stones are built to exacting astronomical specifications, and are inscribed with "10 Guides" (obliquely referencing the 10 Commandments). The monument has inspired a composition by Yoko Ono (found on this album) and multiple conspiracy theories.
  • Hee hee--Carhenge. Who knew?? Thanks the_bone
  • Five hundred million is an astonishingly low number. Were that not number one on the list, the guidelines might sound a hell of a lot more reasonable.
  • Agreed. The low-ness of that figure seems to be the catalyst for most of the conspiratorial lines of thought.
  • Fucking masons.
  • Erected in 1980? For some reason I imagine some rich nerds who'd read a little too much sci-fi optimistically expecting nuclear armageddon, and visualising future tribes finding the stones and following the holy message there inscribed (as well as finding a handy way of measuring the passage of the seasons.) And now those responsible feel a little embarassed about the whole thing, and left off phase two of the construction.
  • good research bone.
  • This is all quite mad. Thanks, bone.
  • To put it in perspective, the global population was last five hundred million in around 1650 CE. To go back to that figure would be, errm, challenging. Great set of links there the_bone.
  • [this is good]
  • On a whim, I went to clonehenge.com to see if anyone had claimed the domain name. What is this?
  • Monkeyfilter: Optimistically expecting nuclear armageddon
  • coppermac, I get that alot also, especially if I make a typo error in the URL or just guessng what a website I want to go to is called. They're these chaps (check the title that comes up on the top bar of your browser), and I'm not sure what they do, but they do buy up lots of domain names.
  • Is that radioliberty site the best description available for the Georgia Guidestones? I was poking around their main site and found some very wierd stuff about miracle soaps and AIDS misinformation. Anyone have any idea who they are?
  • Carhenge! Where the Dodge Darts dwell Where the Mustangs live and they do live well Carhenge!
  • I think that Radio Liberty is some funda-gelical site. I put it as the main link because it seemed to have a good balance between solid information and conspiratorial lunacy (which is always fun when talking about things like the guidestones). The "astronomical" link is hosted under the city of Elbert's official site, so that may be more sane. The best pictures are located at the abovetopsecret.com link.
