Curious George: MoFirc? Why don't we have an irc channel?
  • Exposing my shameful ignorance here - whats an irc channel?
  • mmmm . . instant messaging. real time chat. Oh, Internet Relay Chat.
  • Thanks.
  • Don't do it. It sucks you in and brings you out the other side pale, bearded, shaking and clutching a Dungeons and Dragons character sheet with a wild look in your eyes.
  • I'm all for it. I thought about making our own server a while back but it seemed a little over the top. Someone pick a server and a channel name, quick!
  • How about #metafilter? Boy wouldn't that be evil!
  • #ookookook?
  • It's easy to register a channel on most irc servers: I recommend slashNET just because it's one I know. Here's some info on how to register a channel with them.
  • hehehe. I'm with stripe. But #mofirc sounds good. I vote for it, if it is there any polling on this... By the way, any good IRC client you cand recommend?
  • on windows i'd go with bersirc or the mozilla IRC client. Both can easily be found with a quick google search and are free.
  • Thanks CellarFloor.
  • slashnet.
  • #mofirc reminds me of tofurkey for some reason. Which is not to say I don't like it. Make that another vote.
  • weeeell, there's already a #monkey on /net. their topic is the nsfw image: http://fuzzie.org/moo.jpg doo dah, doo dah
  • meh, #mofirc on /net is up. see you there, y'all
  • I saw you. And only you. Is anyone else using it?
  • I don't know how it works, or at least how to access it (which embarrasses me, being a final year computing student) - anyone care to tell me how? (I have mozilla, so I already have an irc client, or whatever it'd be called)
  • Freakin' technology, dng. Its quite easy to use IRC. Being a computing student you'll figure out. What? the room dissapeared from /net channels list.
  • I'm with dng on this one. Went to slashnet and well... I didn't get it working.
  • My question was an actual inquiry. Why it did dissapeared from /net???
  • I went there fairly soon after the channel was created and boo_radley was there but unresponsive. Seeing as how there's so few of us, it'll be tricky to have more than two people there at any given time. This is a basic IRC tutorial although I don't know how helpful it is. To log in to slashnet, type the following in the input line at the bottom of the window: /server irc.slashnet.org When you're connected, set your irc nickname by typing: /nick Whoever (You can register it if it's available and when you've got some experience behind you.) To join the mofi irc channel type: /join #mofirc In theory, even if it's not a registered channel, by joining it you're creating it. Mind you, it's been a while since I used anything but well-established irc channels, so I could be wrong. It seems to be there at the moment, both on the irc server (although I'm the only one there) and on the slashnet channel list.
  • For pity's sake, mates! Haven't yet grasped the ins and outs of HTML and now we're to take on this, too? Skimming the link, IRC essentially creates a chat-room. Frankly, I abhominate this set-up, having been dragged into AOL chat-room 'conferences' and 'discussions' by well-intended friends and found them to be incoherent -- as well as plagued by passing strangers.
  • I was there, but nobody shown up :( I'm gonna drink the tequila bottle all by myself...
  • Woo hoo! It works! [I'm using Trillian, btw]
  • those with clients to chat, let them chat. Thanks boo and all for the setup!
  • Hmm . . true, not too many ppl hangin at any given time . . well, with 337 potential ircmonkeys maybe we need a timezone to plan... I understand some of you people are in far away lands - what's Idaho like? When would you like to meet on irc? Would the MeFi's dig monkeys on their channel?
  • Yeah, it's straight from that other filter, but it's good ... the irc Bible.
  • This is probably a stupid question petebest, but is your email actually spambot9000 or does one insert your username in place of said robot.
  • I'll be there 14 hours from now. If anyone cares to drop by and say hi.
  • Right now, melinika, mothninja and I are yakking away on #mofirc. Join us!
  • Alnedra just came on, and varj is lurking around as well. Join us!
  • Who was the dear, departed monkey who posted this thread?
  • And we should really have years on the comment timestamp, too...
  • Was it Dizzy?
  • I don't think so. Might have been, though...
  • I would join you, but I am IRC impaired. Some day I will get a client to work. Perhaps if all webpages on IRC weren't so *$%& obtuse.
  • Seven people in here at once... is it a new record?
  • Uh... eight. =)
  • Ten, for a bit there.
  • On IRC: even though i've never met the guy, I'm now going to have a lasting mental image of Squidranch shouting "LOOK! PORN!" at the top of his lungs.
  • On IRC: if mofi is the quaint and perfect town in the countryside where you know everyone and are married with 10 kids, mefi is new york city minus all the cool people.
  • Oops, wrong thread for the above comment. My bad.
  • Hee.
  • On mofirc: if there are no plaid miniskirts or knee socks at the next meetup i will be really bummed. uh oh, another man with the catholic schoolgirl fetish cliche. bone: i will wear one and then you will be really upset.
  • Shit, did it again!
  • Come here!!!!
  • I would like to note that the #mofirc channel is one year old. As of about 6 weeks ago. Soon it will be crawling and talking.
  • the direct link
  • Ah, and the origin of the MoFirc. The history lesson just keeps on coming.
