Byelorussia lost 2,198,000 civilians. The Russian SFSR, or Russia, lost 1,781,000 civilians and about 3 to 4 million military or about 5 to 6 million.

bottom line, war sucks. but then again, in the case of world war II, what was the alternative?
in the case of iraq, LOTS of alternatives.
and, actually, i believe both the loss of civilians and military has drastically declined with each war. where's our war historian?? we have one, i forget his name...

I don't believe recent memory is happening now. I think the point carfilhiot may be trying to make is that this is going on now, therefore we have the ability to do something about it. Even a small thing. Recent memory cannot be changed by action.
I understand the need to cushion oneself from the reality of it, though. Sorry if I seem harsh. I've had a guts full of all this nonsense.
