Gerd Ludwig photography Striking and disturbing photos of pollution and its effects in the former Soviet union. (WARNING: dying baby photo) via digg

Synopsis. Related post.

  • Nice post. He has a fascinating body of work. This is a particulary telling and emotional series. The ice fishing image reminds me of a time that I drove through Gary, Indiana and saw a man fishing on a lake that was covered in a thick fog of grayish-blue smoke. I instantly thought of my old post on Norilsk, thanks for the "shoutout".
  • Beautiful, haunting pictures. Gentlemen, gerd your Ludwigs.
  • These people deserve better!
  • Brilliant images but... How many exquisitely photographed depictions of our collective corruption will it take? Since the beginning of the industrial revolution the now-wealthy nations of the world have behaved in a similar manner, with equally horrific consequences. One can say that it is unfair to demand better behavior from currently developing countries or that they should know better, given our example, but I doubt that such admonitions will have much effect. As a species we're heedlessly and hopelessly motivated by greed and self-interest, so as our populations grows, we and our little planet are probably screwed.
  • Damn, this makes me so angry. Rich fuckers get theirs and leave the kids to suffer. The prevailing mentality in the US seems to be not my backyard, not my problem. Can't happen here. Can and does, we just hide it well. Has there ever been a politician that wasn't evil?
  • Amen, islander!
