How do you pronounce Pinochet? There's no single correct pronunciation for the name in Chile. The first two syllables don't change too much, and should be something between "pin-oh" and "pee-no." But the last syllable is up for grabs: Some Chileans go with "shay," others "chay," and still others "chet."
  • Chet. He's no more French than Andre PreVIN (not VAN). But since he's been pronounced dead, who cares?
  • Well, dead people, good or evil, do get referred to occasionally. Here's a silly discussion by physics types of how to pronounce Einstein. And didn't I read somewhere that Dr. Seuss would've pronounced his nom de plume as "Zoyce"?
  • Soice?
  • At least we can agree on how to spell it, unlike some people's names.
  • Excellent article, darling!
  • CBC is calling him Pino-chett. Good article, indeed, darling!
  • "Worm food"
  • Who cares?
  • ...How Do You Say Auf Wiedersehen..?
  • Pinochet - Oh! How your nose would grow When you lied about your crimes, And we hated you so! Pinochet - Oh, But now where did you go? Is it to "a better place"? I really don't think so!
  • Who cares? Historians, probably! Just a wild guess!
  • Pinocchio works for me...
  • pen o' shit
  • Pin-oh-chet. Rhymes with shit. No, really.
  • From Benedetti Para matar al hombre de la paz para golpear su frente limpia de pesadillas tuvieron que convertirse en pesadilla para vencer al hombre de la paz tuvieron que congregar todos los odios y ademas los aviones y los tanques para batir al hombre de la paz tuvieron que bombardearlo hacerlo llama porque el hombre de la paz era una fortaleza Remember, Allende?
  • Peeno-shiat
  • The Feminisation of Chile At present, Bachelet and the others are on trial. ‘We’ll have made it when we’re allowed to govern as badly as a man!’ Looks like 'Pinocho' was a popular local diminutive for the controversial local moral dwarf.
  • NPR had two "authoratative" versions of the pronounciation and they cotradicted each other. Can someone check to see how his family pronounces it? Columns in two newspapers acknowledged his brutality, but pointed out that he left office after losing an election. They compared his brutality with Castro's equal or greater brutality, and pointed out that Castro is revered by many. Go figure.
