A question about MoFi bookmark icon
Okay, the discussion mattowie started on MeTa has inspired me to try to develop my MoFi participation. One question I have, though, is the little bookmark icon. MeFi has a cute little picture; so does MeCha (see screenshot of my bookmarks at the link). Is there one for MoFi as well, or has it been deemed unnecessary? This is not a criticism; I'm just curious, George.

That's the "favicon.ico" file, or in other words, a 16x16 bitmap that one can place in the root of a web site so that those who bookmark the site get a customized icon associated with the site as opposed to the generic msie, firefox, or whatever other associated icon. Just a little add-on, not a necessity.
 -
Do you mean http://monkeyfilter.com/favicon.ico? Your browser should be using that. It's a standard of sorts.
 -
Well, Doohickie, my MoFi bookmark icon's a small grey square with a circle of oxblood over which is superimposed a black non-serif M. Yours appears to be identical to the MS Internet Explorer icon. Dunno why the difference, but then I don't know much.
 -
Heh, the MonkeyFlinger knows. Using FireFox 2.0. browser.
 -
So why doesn't it come up automagically like the others? I did it manually, so I'm happy:
...but I worry about other IE users!
 -
It's always reminded me of the Bat Signal.
 -
Oh... and thanks!
 -
my MoFi bookmark icon's a small grey square with a circle of oxblood over which is superimposed a black non-serif M. Really? How about that. I always thought it was a flying monkey silhouetted by an angry moon.
 -
I assumed it was the Dark Mark.
 -
It is all of the above. And then some!
 -
IE has different rules for pulling up a favicon -- but it should still pull it from the root menu like other browsers. In other words, I blame Microsoft.
 -
It is an ancient and arcane glyph. Those who look on it are doomed to go MAD!!!! MAD, I say!!!! (From the Sherlock Holmes mystery The Circle Of Oxblood by Arthur Conan Doyle)
 -
It's our clique's secret tattoo
 -
My IE6 (and IE7 at home) sometimes brings up the favicon, sometimes not. It's moody, I guess.
 -
See? This is what they're complaining about over there: there is just no Serious Discussion™ on this site. I blame it on Mathowie.
 -
But ... do we want Series Percussing?
 -
It's always reminded me of the Bat Signal. Me too! ZAP! SPLAT! KERPLOWIE!
 -
Delete out the bookmark and save it again...that usually fixes the problem. But then again, it could just be IE.
 -
What is this "IE" of which you speak?... I just think that IE's favicon handling is flaky.
 -
Perhaps IE thinks that your favicon handling is flaky!!
 -
That was cruel ... I'm sorry.
 -
...but I worry about other IE users! Me too.

Me firefox didn't recognize the icon on my "Personal Bookmark List" (although it recognized everything else, including that stupid MeFi) until I changed the URL to a fully qualified one: http://www.monkeyfilter.com/ (with the trailing fowrward-slash). Now it's happy. Yay!
