The Ship That Sailed to Mars Online version of William Timlin's 1923 illustrated book.

'The book contains 48 color illustrations, alternating with 48 leaves of calligraphic text. The story is of a man who designs and builds a sailing ship that soars through a fanciful trip to Mars. The illustrations are a mix of science fiction, whimsy, and fantasy.' Brought to mind by monkeyhumper's post below. Geocities site - may be a bit slow.

  • I inspire! I bring together worlds! Now it is time to DESTROY THEM! Muahhahhahah
  • Absolutely enchanting. Wonderful post, thank you, islander.
  • This is excellent, islander! )))!!! 'Tain't every day one finds an author with the fortitude to take a ship offworld which contains a cow, among other delights. And the illustrations are equally engrossing.
  • "And they left him, muttering in their beards as they went, for they had no faith, nor any belief, in Fairies." Greatest. Line. Ever. )))!
  • way to kill geocities, guys. I guess I'm just going to have to go to mars myself, now.
  • Damn! I wish I could draw like that!
  • Meant to look a second time at this, but it's down right now. Was impressed by delicate colours ... strong inked lines ... definitely a period look to everything. And a light feel, nothing heavy-handed.
  • Gah! It's been Monkeyfiltered! Nevermind, road trip to Mars with Nickdanger! I call shotgun. Don't forget the cow.
  • I do like a little bit of butter with my bread -- A.A. MIlne
  • Nice post islander!! And, it is back up - as of now anyways...
  • That's a great fairy tale.
