Curious George: I've been condemned to browser hell Firefox I.5.0.3 went nuts on me a few hours ago -- anyway I finally broke what was left of into pieces and trashed them.

Has anyone else had this problem with FF greying out whole toolbars, failing to connect to the internets, developing a tumourous-looking droop in the status bar, and throwing out some extensions all on its own? Shocked me. I had it a couple of years on my old machine, where it was no trouble at all. And why wouldn't it do a tidy uninstall of itself? Could really use some advice here. Even a bad joke or two would be a delightful change. I'm using an unfamiliar browser now. figure it will be more fun with monkeys than trying to sort through more stacks of Opera info. /bee--trade, and feeling bee-10

  • I use the same version. Only problem I get is running some video files, and occasionaly the browser window sort of flickers while loading a page. Nothing like you describe. Some elements: You have two machines? On the old one FF proved no problem? You have installed it[FF] on a newer machine? Via download? Which machine and browser are you using to post? I am getting confused?.
  • I want to see your tumourous looking droop. Pix plz.
  • Nothing useful to say, but *hugs* the bee-leaguered bees
  • Export your bookmarks (under the manage bookmarks option in the bookmarks), uninstall (and even if the uninstall doesn't work go ahead and do the next step), find the mozilla folder and delete it (assuming this is windows xp, I think there will actually be a mozilla folder in program files as well as one in Documents and Settings\***whateveryourusernameis***\Local Settings\Application Data (the local settings and application data folders are "hidden" so you might need to turn on "show hidden folders" you can google for how to do that). After that you should be able to reinstall firefox from scratch and have a normal install. You can then import your bookmarks. Any themes or extensions will have to be reinstalled, however. It is possible that a misbehaving theme or extension is what has caused the problem, so you might want to be careful with those for a while.
  • The old PC no functions. On the old machine FF was no problem; used it for a couple of years -- never had to uninstall it or even think much about it. Added FF to the new machine. And it ran smoothly up till a few hours ago when suddenly the taskbar with File Edit etc on it greyed out and nothing could be done to coax a bookmark into appearing. The navigation bar worked, and so did the RSS bar/tab bar. So I shut down the machine, rebooted, and discovered to my increasing horror FF no longer responded, it wouldn't go on line. So I Googled and finally half-guessed that it might have been triggered by an update to extensions in FF, one of which was Firefoxcast (a weather channel feed) -- which I believe was the culprit, since I noticed it was behaving oddly (icons incorrect for the date etc) before they vanished. so I uninstalled FF. Or, more accurately tried to using the WX control panel, only to find it was not all out. So I picked and poked at pieces of it, think I got 'em all. Reinstalled FF. Same problem. Went back and uninstalled everything again. Found a few more things like old tired links to articles on mozilla and FF and removed those. Then reinstalled again. Still no workee. So I went and installed Opera. Which is altogether a wee booger of a thing to learn. I have to shut it down and turn it back on in order to get it to work. I am a klutz typist, and Opera's 's very much more keyboard-sensitive than anything I would normally dream of using -- I hit wrong keys all the time, and have already thrown monkeyfilter for this page/thread into its trash bin. I have not figured how to get it out of the trash bin. So I have to use yet another browser to come in here and read things and it's all getting very Keystone cops, really, curse it to hell with the hungry ghosts, may theu feast on it!
  • So sorry bees, wish I could help - hope you get things worked out soon. This too shall pass, etc.
  • <3s mothninja!!!! Avoid the flames, flee this thread, mothninja!!! jccalhoun, the bookmarks were greyed out -- inoperable, so it was impossible to access or export them. There were a sizeable number of mozilla bits and pieces, but I think they are all gone, now, too. So far uninstall has been attempted thrice. Tried two installs. No luck. So now Opera are circling one another in a stiff-legged way. My hackles are up. There is entirely too much material available to read through all of the instructions on Opera's website, plus some of them are for older versions and haven't been updated. There has to be an easier way!
  • You could try runing FF in safe mode, no extentions or themes are loaded. Under windows 2000/xp click the start button then the run icon on the menu. In the dialog that pops up stuff: firefox.exe -safe-mode this probably won't help but it might keep you busy till the asteroid hits. Which I better than being in fear. It might actually might work. But I'm guessing. When I was at uni, I used to do technical support, it was simple then.
  • FF is gone. And the odd leftover bits are in the trashcan, randomaction. I did try running FF in safe mode, but it didn't respond, unfortunately -- parts of it seemed to be frozen. The data was still somewhere in the machine, I'm sure, but I couldn't get it to respond -- no bookmarks, no connecting to the internet, no ability to print material or to paste things etc. Too useless. So I uninstalled it. Seemed pointless to reinstall again, for when I did try, both times the new install would be greyed out and nn-responsive just like the former try. Which is why I went to Opera. But Opera is not my friend. It wants me to be a perfect typist. And now I can't get Opera to disgorge. I'm thinking about uninstalling it -- back to square one -- it's madness!
  • Didja do a full virus check?
  • the beeswacky browser blew up what's up with that?
  • im sorry beeswacky, I don't know what to suggest now.
  • If your bookmarks can be found under \\documents and settings\ in an .html file starting with bookmarks Just do a search for bookmarks. Sorry.
  • Reinstall FF. Start up in -safe -mode and choose the option "reset the toolbars". The only other option I can think of is You obviously have too much poetry on your hard drive. A bad haiku can seriously screw up your machine.
  • beeswacky does not have any bad haiku.
  • > Which is why I went to Opera. But Opera is not my friend. It wants me to be a perfect typist. to remove keyboard shortcuts in opera, go to tools > preferences > mouse and keyboard. duplicate the "opera standard" set up (in case you ever need to revert to it). edit the "copy of opera standard" to remove the keyboard shortcuts. (need to select within the different categories and keep the delete key pressed to go through the list). set the "copy of opera standard" as the default.
  • tick, I'm clean. And I've managed to get Opera to leggo the URL for this thread/page, which is a big step in the right direction. Definitely feeling more bucked now. randomaction, I thank you very much for trying. Monkeys are most kind, and just talking to someone responsive is very pleasant after messing (and I use that word advisedly) around with that inflexible ex-browser. Going to make do with Opera till I can find out what to do to restore FF to its original efficient glory. some wander by mistake, that's just what I'd like to know, too. ... Arrrggghhh!
  • Hang in there o bard of befouled browsers!
  • Nuke it from orbit, it's the only etc., etc. Yeah, I got nuthin'. But you have my sympathy, bees.
  • I'll stick with 1.5.0.2 until you crazy people debug it for me. I am SO not a beta gal.
  • Thanks, roryk. Suppose flinging out the Opera trash bin was not one of my better notions. I'll try your remedy instead. Opera seems like a decent browser, really, if it were just more organized to find things in. And muteboy, you've managed to turn my otherwise harrowing day completely around! Ta!
  • OMG was it a beta?! *faints*
  • Squeeee!! I feel validated!
  • I think it's safe to blame that asshole "collingwood" for everything that goes wrong from now on. Have at it!
  • Opera seems like a decent browser I really loved it when it first came out, but damn, if it doesn't crash like nothing else on earth. Cold boot, anyone?
  • Cold boot, always (#1 fix on the west side!) You can search for "bookmark*.*" and find the html where e'er it may lurk. I haven't had to uninstall Firefox for a couple of versions now, it seems the new installation takes care of that for me. I also found that Avant Browser is a Windows Explorer-based browser with the tabs and the Adblock and the Firefox-like features, m'whOYVen glaven! Good luck Sir Bees, and we'll be here when the browser complies!
  • Get a mac. //Kicks back and enjoys the show//
  • > Avant Browser is useful if you absolutely must use internet explorer for certain things (work, for example). i quite liked the ie 7 beta 2 (tabs, rss feeds, etc.), though i had to uninstall it when certain browser-based applications ceased to function.
  • I got nuthin' here, either. Except to say sorry, bees and good luck. *big bee hug, avoiding stingers etc.*
  • Avant Browser ... is useful if you absolutely must use internet explorer for certain things (work, for example). The IE Tab extension for Firefox is even more useful, if you can get Firefox workin' again.
  • > The IE Tab extension for Firefox is even more useful this looks interesting. does it support activex controls?
  • Perhaps it's a problem with your Firefox profile, which wouldn't necessarily have been removed when uninstalling Firefox. From the Mozilla Firefox FAQ - If you encounter strange problems relating to bookmarks, downloads, window placement, toolbars, history, or other settings, it is recommended that you try creating a new profile... Information on managing profiles here.
  • Thank you, everyone -- there's certainly food for thought here, and so far Opera hasn't crashed.... /walks on eggshells
  • Thank you, everyone -- there's certainly food for thought here, and so far Opera hasn't crashed.... I will look into creating a new FF profile. Didn't realize there was an IE tab extension -- don't think IE is on this machine, seem to have Netscape instead. /walks on eggshells
  • ? Oh, dear. I'm redundant, obviously. Sorry.
  • *Hugs Bees *lights incense and prostrates self in front of computer with correctly working FoxFire browser
  • *sigh*
  • *sigh*
  • Bees, Opera don't play nice with Mofi on commenting -- I believe you have to preview every comment to avoid dupes like that.
  • It's a browser thing? WTF?
  • It has its eccentricities, yes -- it's different enough some things haven't made sense to me yet (the way it treats bookmarks). And posting with it is a chore -- I can't tell if it actually posts unless I go to another thread and update that thread from over there. Life is much more challenging FF left: figure trying to learn OPera is a good workout for that intractible thing between my ears. Thufferin' Thuccotatsh!
  • = since FF left
  • What about holding down the Shift key and hitting Refresh (or Reload, or whatever Opera calls it) Would that show you your new post?
  • It does odd things then, sometimes switxches to a previously viewed page -- or, when I go to use search on MoFi, for example, it flings me back so I have to sign in again, and then when I do so and try Search a second time, blip, I'm back to square one, and having to sign in again. And I use Search a great deal, so this is completely unsatisfactory. What's more, trying to see whether any page on MoFi has updated once/after I've posted entails a major bout of work. There's something about Opera I'm just not grasping, I think: at this point, it seems to be the most afunctional browser I've ever tried. What with one thing and another, petes, disliking Opera grows very easy.
  • In all fairness to Opera, it seems to be a very swift browser. Far faster than Netscape on my machine. (So was FF.) And has some interesting options I haven't seen elsewhere, at least, judging by the article in Wikipedia (not that I've found all these yet). But it has serious drawbacks if you haven't a lot of time to spend looking for and into the hows of its functioning, I'm finding.
  • Opera is a good browser, but yes, does have a bit of a learning curve compared to FF and IE. It also has its quirks, as you're learning, but I tend to think of it as being like the old transistor radio in the garage that won't die -- you may have to stick a screwdriver in the antenna hole and whack it with a ballpeen hammer, but the damn thing picks up Mexican radio stations.
  • I'm about ready to uninstall it, mct. Don't have the time or the temperament to learn it -- and am fasting loosing any desire to do so. Opera's now doing all sorts of uncalled-for things, such as sticking unwanted/unneeded icons on my desktop, failing to let me sign into MoFi, failing to allow me to access my email (I use only online providers, I don't use email clients installed on this machine), and insists that my email comes from another country and I therefore cannot access it, etc etc. As a browser it's increasingly useless to me. Just too much to deal with -- I manage to do less and with it. Very unpleasant experience thus far.
  • Poor Bees, this all sounds quite painful. How about giving FireFox one more chance. Make sure your bookmarks are backed up then... Have a look at the steps listed here and make sure that all remaining bits have been removed, especially your profile, then download a fresh copy of FireFox and install it. On Windows XP, your profile will probably be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR-USERNAME-HERE\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ If that doesn't work I'd suspect something like a messed up registry or other nasty Windows glitches, to be the problem(s). Hard to troubleshoot remotely so you may need to call in local help.
  • islander, I tried your link, and now I've got Firefox back in and functioning, sans it's former extensions, or at least the two I was most suspicious of. Thank you so much for your help!!!!! I am tremendously grateful. Still a wee bit odd -- has the status bar enlargement, but it goes online and goes to other websites. Which is really I want in a browser, now I think about it. Oh, happy day, calloooo callay!
  • Ought to add -- I've reinstalled FF, all right, but it's a 1.5.0.4 -- maybe that's helping, too.
  • Yay! 1.5.0.4 was just released yesterday so yer all up-to-date. As far as extensions go, I like to keep them to a minimum as many are often more trouble than they're worth. This may help with your status bar problem.
  • Ah- HA! 'Twas the extension Forecastfox which was updated an hour or so before the problems developed. (Ain't using any extensions any more!) Yes, I can live with a deformed status bar. For a while. It was being unable to go online or to access bookmarks that was so unpleasant. And I'm ecstatic to have the bookmarks back. Thanks again, islander -- and everyone for your assistance and sympathy.
  • Well, the mysterious enlargement of the status bar is gone. I did nothing to cause it to go, it just went -- but I'm delighted it did. I took jccalhoun's excellent advice and saved a copy of my bookmarks to a folder, so I can still use 'em if anything of this sort crops again. It has been a very strange trip. But much more fun with monkeys!
  • Aaaand just a little one over here . . . MonkeyFilter: the mysterious enlargement of the status bar is gone. And . . . okay! That's a wrap people! Everyone over to the Kwik-E-Mart for microwave burritos and blueberry squishees! Yay!
  • Nice one, islander! I've had Enlarged Statusbaritis before, can't remember what caused it or even how I got rid of it and that was in FF, so you're not alone.
  • Finish the job, Pete! MonkeyFilter: It has been a very strange trip. But much more fun with monkeys!
  • Hooray!
