Cancer go bye bye? I for one look forward to being able to take up smoking again.
  • Egad, Brain!
  • Cure for cancer in five years? My god, the fools. What about all the important scientific studies we need on whether hamsters prefer attractive humans or estimating the total surface area of Indian Elephants?
  • I've had juvenile diabetes for nearly 20 years. I remeber when I was first diagnosed, everybody was saying we would have the cure within 5-10 years. They've been saying it ever since. I hope these fellers are on to something, but I'm not holding my breath until it's a fait accompli.
  • WAIT UP! Look again at the date of this article - Friday, 8 April, 2005. So that means we only need to wait for a cure in four years ! Hurrah! <\gets out calendar>
  • But, But, But, what oh what will Fark do for tagging stories about dubious science?!
  • Me too, TUM--18 years and counting. Surprisingly, Lee Iacocca's foundation is pursuing some promising stuff right now, but is having to fund it privately since it's cure research rather than "inhalable insulin" or "better sugar substitute" research. Not that I think certain pharmaceuticals don't WANT to cure type I...*grumble grumble* But still, that's years away, even if it does work. It's nice to dream, though.
  • > What about all the important scientific studies recently read a nice one from the bmj late last year.
  • Lights up cig ~coff~ Damn, better givem up. Not chuckin the dice with death's no fun! Read some stuff on a fixer for Diabetes-1 Oz medics'r workin on. 5 yrs they reckon to finish trials. So far, so good, and they reckon it's the winner.
  • 5 years to "a cure of all types of cancer" sounds exceedingly optimistic to me, even hubristic. 5 years to "a very good new treatment for several types of cancer which will boost survival rates considerably" sounds more likely.
  • Maybe "5 years to a cure" is a better slogan for generating funding interest. Which unfortunately is a problem for something that aims to eliminate a disease rather than treat it continually and generate a revenue stream. *grumble grumble*
  • Ooo, look, mama, it's a Cape of Invulnerability! ...it's a floor wax! It's a desert topping! It's a bottle of magic! No, wait, it's the Werzog's knobby knees!...
  • From thread to thread a bee must dart. then dance, his knowledge to impart. Sometimes the dance is nought but rhumba depending where he shakes his bumba.
  • It's a nice idea, but does this team understand the long term effects of having a "thousand-fold" increase in t-cells? Perhaps the human body has a reason why there are fewer...
  • Hi Mr. Head: Ya gotta point, there. ummmm... I mean in your comment. It all sounds good, and we can but wish. MonkeyFilter: I'm not holding my breath until it's a fait accompli. MonkeyFilter: So far, so good, and they reckon it's the winner. hey.
  • I think it is important to keep our priorities in perspective. We can't be spending our precious resources on unproven scientific theories like this when there is an important war on terrorism to be fought.
  • Don't forget, we also have that wall along the Mexican border that ain't gonna build itself...
  • Lara, and since the whole concept stinks, we can build it out of smell absorbing concrete! It's win-win.
  • But what about teh ghey?!?!?!
  • In other news: still no cure for the summertime blues...
  • )))), Bluehorse! We should be running the damned govermit thing!
  • Thanks petebest. Forgot about the ghey. Got to get rid of them before we worry about cancer cures. Perspective and focus. Must focus on what is important.
