In August 2006, the 10th Discworld Convention will be held in Hinckley, Leicestershire. This is half a Curious, George actually. Is anyone interested in attending? I would love to go if I could, and would like some company!
  • Sounds like such fun, I love the Discworld series. I hope you get to attend Alnedra. Too far away for me to travel.
  • Ooh! This is so cool. I think Dreadnought and I would, though the accomodation might be a bit expensive. If you came all the way to England, I definitely would.
  • I have no idea what a Discworld Convention is, but if it is anything like the Discoworld Convention that I attended in April, then you can count me in.
  • And Diane Duane is going to be there. Cool. She wrote the "So you want to be a wizard" series. It's like Harry Potter meets The Books of Magic.
  • Terry Pratchett is rubbish! *Runs away*
  • One of these days, kit - BAM! Straight to the moon!
  • I remember typing "I hate Terry Pratchett" into Google once, when I was bored. Found lots of new friends! *catches up with kit*
  • *feels a bit braver now there's two of us* Ya boo sucks to Terry Pratchett and all who follow him! *Thumbs nose at Neddy, runs away again*
  • *wipes dust of 100 TON HAMMER™, gives chase*
  • *Gets away through some sub-Douglas Adams plot device and humor, whilst selling FAR too many books and wearing a silly hat* Ring any bells, Ned-ster?!!
  • Last time I saw him the silly hat was nowhere to be seen. All he was wearing was his shiny baldness. Wait, that doesn't sound right.
  • Ring any bells, Ned-ster?!! Adams is not fit to lick Pratchett's freshly-buttered dome. *throws beets*
  • > And Diane Duane is going to be there. ♪ ♫ ♪ her name is rio and she dances on the sand just like that river twisting through a dusty land ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪
  • *catches beet, makes a lovely butty, settles down with The Salmon of Doubt* Yum. Lovely. Ha Ha! That's a good one, Douglas!
  • Pratchett wears a stupid hat, writes the same book again and again, is liked by people who thought series 8 of Red Dwarf was funny, uses footnotes, makes lame 'observational' jokes about mobile phones, call centres and other modern contrivances, carries a stupid cane, and I hate him. Death, the Luggage, that wizard, the little Scottish stereotype things, the turtle, all of them can just f**k off. I hate him, I hate him, I hate him. I hate him in the same way I hate Nigel Rees. People with shelves full of Pratchett, Stephen King and Pink Floyd CDs can all go the same way. I loved Douglas Adams. Not everything he wrote was great, and the casting of the original radio series stank, but I loved him nonetheless. I feel quite strongly on this issue.
  • *doesn't run this time.*
  • You go for it! I agree (apart from 'der Floyd', I quite like them). Just not funny. It's the humor of a humorless man. Now all we've got to do is watch out for Neddy's hammer... Oh, and Buffy is rubbish too
  • Tracicle, I'd like to take this opportunity to call for the bannination and subsequent beatdown of katfirsto and mootbay. They broke Monkeyfilter yesterday.
  • Yes! And I'd do it again in an INSTANT, I tell you! Ha Ha Ha Ha HaaaaAAAaaaaaaa! *jumps through window*
  • I'm going to ban kitfisto just for saying Buffy is rubbish. I was right with him up to that point, but now...BANNINATION. Oh. Except he jumped out a window.
  • But he landed on a fluffy pillow! BAN HIM!!
  • *flings 100 TON HAMMER™ out the window*
  • *Activates the Infinite Improbability Drive* Wow, a 100 ton beetroot! Happy days are here again!
  • You're like Baldrick with his turnips kit.
  • Now Blackadder - THAT was funny. wibble
  • Agreed, kit. Blackadder was funny. I preferred a cleverer Baldrick. As was Porridge, Black Books, some of Monty Python (but not nearly as much as you'd think), Phoenix Nights, some of the Comic Strip Presents..., the first series of Bottom, the first series of Little Britain. I could go on. I'm told I do. Goodbile!
  • David Jason to play Rincewind in Sky TV's "Color of Magic"?????? Only about 40 years and 40 pounds too late.
  • I also pictured Rincewind as about 30ish - not young, but not old either. Also, kind of cadaverous, but that may have to do with the cover art.
  • Also, if someone would like to claim that Pratchett writes the same book again and again, I would suggest that person a) has not read many of his books, and those they did read were early works or b) has reading problems, and thus failed to actually understand the books he read. Pratchett has grown significantly as a writer over his career, and now I would include him among some of the more profound authors of the 20th/21st century, though his profoundness is veiled behind a light humourous style, so that his deeper thought slips in quietly, unobtrusively. Perhaps that will make him more important in the years to come - like Jane Austen, people will read him because they enjoy him, and because they realise that novels can be fun and good at the same time.
  • Still reading two-three Pratchett novels every week. Registered and paid for next year's Discworld Conference already (I registered the moment I saw that registration was open in my email, and I still got a three digit badge number!). Watched Hogfather and cried a bit. So...anyone up for a Mofi-meetup in Discworld Conference 2008?
