Apparently, it's time for member authentication thanks to Mr. I-need-to-spoil-the-party.
  • What a sad, sad, person. But someone must have the authority to clean up the front page and bann his ass, right?
  • Where's Matt when you need him?
  • Yeah. Triacle does, but she's in New Zealand so she may be out of commission for a bit.
  • Er.. tracicle. Now you know what I hear in my head every time I read her name.
  • Say, now that's just classy. Apparently this is why we can't have nice things at MonkeyFilter, either. What is this member authentication you speak of?
  • I'm not sure how this system works in particular, but I imagine that there's some way for an administrator to validate new members. So you send them an email and they send you one back and you know it's not just spam. And then, even if they get past that and are acting like total cocks, you delete them. This is why new user sign-ups are too much of a bitch for Matt. At least if there's a link staging area, he knows they are probably authentic users.
  • I was here after he posted his first FPP and wanted so badly to delete him... Great restraint shown by all not replying to his FPP. I'm all for the member authentication as well.
  • How many hoops will a user desiring membership jump through that a user wishing to disrupt the community would not? As far as authentication, I was surprised that it was not a part of the process, but it will not solve everything. We must also have mechanisms to cull the detrimental members from the masses. IP-based banning has the potential of wiping out innocent users in instances where connections are shared. It is also useless against users without static IP addresses (dialup, some DSL, and some Cable users). Username banning does not prevent the offender from simply registering again. E-mail address banning is ineffective thanks to the myriad of free providers, and inexpensive domain registration. There is no assured way to open the doors to new members without having a few bad seeds slip by. The most effective response is to simply remove the pleasure that might be derived from trolling MoFi. The community response, along with proper banning measures should ensure a reasonable level of signal to noise. Also, perhaps a twenty-four hour delay between sign up and sign in would help prevent trolling impulses, though that may be a bit discouraging to budding new members.
  • I agree that too many hoops would be bad--maybe one or two as managable by administrators. It's kind of like locking your car door. Will that stop anyone who really wants to steal your cds? Doubtful. Will it stop someone who has the impulse to steal them but no real determination? Probably. I hope I'm not speaking for myself when I say that current members are committed to making this a worthwhile community and if taking some steps to make sure you're not an evil spammer troll is enough of a deterrent to someone signing up, so be it.
  • speaking for *just myself, that is.
  • Sorry guys, my laptop died yesterday and I had to dig out my PC from under a pile of junk to get back online. Anyway, the user is deleted. We don't have any form of authentication - something I'll get on to Jack at metaphilter about right away.
  • Can you delete the posts? It just switched to posted by Anonymous (as I'm sure you noticed).
  • And sorry about your laptop! I'd have to kill myself.
  • I vote for email authentication and 24-hour waiting period. Both will help cull trolls and neither will deter people who really want to be join. And Kimberly, you're not (just) speaking for yourself. Or speaking (just) for yourself. Or speaking for (just) yourself.
  • Don't make me start our second smackdown. *poises fingers above keyboard*
  • Yeah, it's an iBook and I've found they are notorious for the logic board failing. This is the third time since I got it a year ago. Warranty runs out in exactly one week, too. I've deleted the user (which is why it switched to anonymous) and I think I got all the posts. Must find way to not have to delete manually in such situations... Guh. I'll suggest it to Jack at metaphilter for the next release and see if I can work on a hack for us.
  • [sap] I know it's been said, but I feel I must say again how much I appreciate all the work you're putting into MoFi, tracicle. You rock my mommy. Thank you! [/sap]
  • The allegations about me and your mommy are completely false, and I certainly did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.
  • Good afternoon, everyone. I'm a former Mefite recently gone into self-imposed permanent exile - would it be inappropriate for me to join you all?
  • If anyone wants to vet my credentials, here's my Mefi Profile, my posting history is all there, 2 1/2years worth. http://www.metafilter.com/user.mefi/7870
  • Welcome Fes! Although I haven't always agreed with you on MeFi, I've found a lot of value in your comments. And also, I don't think that anyone really needs to ask permission to be here. That's kind of why we decided to band together and speak like monkeys. (Guys? Back me up?) As long as everyone remembers to play nice and not to poo in the sandbox I think we'll all get along great. I'm pleasantly surprised MeFiers are coming to the party. Yeehaw! I just hope the bandwidth holds out.
  • Normally, I wouldn't weigh in on this issue, but as we are not yet 50 strong, I feel my opinion must carry some weight: We're be glad to have you, Fes! As far as user auth... I've installed MetaPhilter over on my box to play with and try to get a feel for the code. Once I do, I'll submit proposals and/or patches to Jack. I would appreciate Tracicle's opinion on appropriate measures to help direct my tinkering. Also, any php/mySQL folks please get in touch with me. I have very little experience, though I can flesh out a decent plan.
  • [note to self: Preview -> Edit -> Post = Bad. Preview -> Edit -> Preview -> Post = Good.]
  • Thanks, Kimberly and Pandemic. If you nose around, you'll find that it was a lack of playing nice that helped me decide to leave Mefi. I appreciate you letting me hang out here, and though you may continue not to agree with what I say? I promise: no sandbox pooping :)
  • (sorry, obviously I got to this party late and have no idea whats going on, due to all the deletions and bannings and such) Was some guy posting goatse to the front page? Cos when Bookfilter, musicfilter and some of the others started up, about six months ago, they all had someone do this to them too - some guy called Bob, I think. Their solution was to block his IP address, which seemed to work.
  • That's kind of why we decided to band together and speak like monkeys. (Guys? Back me up?) Oooo! Ooo! Ooo!
  • Do you mind if I smoke in this thread? Only the finest cigars, I assure you!
  • dng, we had about 8 postings in a row of the goatse link. They have since been deleted. Thank goodness.
  • Who will join me in a fine glass of Port?
  • Oh dear. Personality swapping, not available on MeFi, has become a surreal reality on MoFi. Wait a minute. Which pill did I take? certainsome1 - You make-a me laugh.
  • Oook! OOK! Oh wait.. that's orangutang. Nevermind.
  • Migs, I'll have some of that port over here.
  • hi all! I promise not to post goatse or tubgirl links (but I hope you don't mind a little gayfilter now and then) : >
  • I came for the low user number, and stayed for the great posts. I think you are all onto something here, and have been wondering when a MeFi splinter group would form due to the inability to sign up. Good work here.
  • Heh. With a grrr! to go. I should like to point out that, although this MiguelCardoso guy says the sorts of things I'd say (for which many thanks), I shall be posting here with a space between my names. As authentication, I refer my hosts to my recent comment on MeTa. I will, of course, assume the debts of my namesake - namely one glass of fine port for pizzasub. But that's it! ;)
  • Wonderful old-timer usage of advanced html is further proof of authenticity.
  • Damn.. too slow. I think I'm starting to become a little overwhelmed by all this sudden activity. I miss the good old days, the days of the single-digit user number. Things were better, then... *swoon*
  • Oh my goodness, I can actually comment and MIGUEL can read it? *nervous fan laughter*
  • I think I'm starting to become a little overwhelmed by all this sudden activity. I miss the good old days, the days of the single-digit user number. Things were better, then... That's the spirit! show us newbies what's what!
  • oops...i guess italics don't work here?
  • I'm about to reveal my inner geek, but this reminds me of the days when I was on a bbs with a 2400 baud modem. Then, one magic day in magic land, I got a 14.4 and the conversation scrolled so fast I didn't know what to do with myself. How will I get any work done ever again?!
  • oops...i guess italics don't work here? The <i> tag isn't valid XHTML, so it is ignored by MetaPhilter. The same goes for <b>. In their place you can use <em> and <strong>.
  • thanks, Pandemic : >
  • Consider yourself closely monitored from now on, Mickey. :) Thanks, Pandemic! (What about small tags, without which us obsessives would feel, well, just about downright nekkid?) Hi fellow newbie, amberglow - have we met before? I have this vague memory of a bar mitzah gone way, way too far... Still, musn't let these young 'uns make too much fun of us over-the-hillers, right?
  • The tag isn't valid XHTML, so it is ignored by MetaPhilter. The same goes for . Actually they both are valid XHTML 1.1. Oh, and I'd like to request
    too.
  • I demand heavy women for which to satisfy my insatiable lust!
  • Oh, and fake Miguel is getting kinda old. And monkeyfilter desperately needs monkeyfilter.com, and maybe some better hosting. No offense, but it really is kinda slow.
  • Old? Old? Already? Bah! I shake my hairy fist at you and say Fie! Yeah. You're right. I'm bored with this already. Hey! Has anyone signed up as FakeThomcatspike yet?
  • Unfortunately, tracicle is in New Zealand and so, consequently, is unable to register one of those funky free 3-year hosting accounts (as per previous MeFi thread). Now.. if some kind US/Cananananada-based soul would register a hosting account for her, I'm sure it would be much faster and, more importantly, greatly appreciated by all....
  • kickingtheground -- agreed that we need better hosting, but understand that we started today with 16 users and the echoing of our own voices in the halls here... It is... not intimidating... well, okay, a little intimidating -- this sudden rush of folks and MeFites especially. Too many Miguels to keep track of. But you are all most welcome here. It is overhwelming (maybe that's the right word) all this sudden rushing of posting. Impossible to keep up. Now I understand the addiction. From the outside of MeFi, it seemed somewhat slow, leisurely, reading the comments... but when you're down in it it's a ragin' river! Yeehaw! </babbling>
  • it's actually more overwhelming.. sheesh.
  • Congrats, tracicle, not only are you inching toward triple-digit membership, but you already got your first pony request. Yes, it's MeFite #206 here, just protecting my trademark. I'd say I was going to post things here I don't consider good enough for MeFi, but if you know my history there, you know there isn't anything I don't consider good enough for MeFi. It's good to see an "AltFilter" taking off with good participation in FPPs AND Comments. (Anybody remember the over-hyped launch of 'MetaPop'? Now, it's become pretty much one guy's blog) And if you need more bananas, the 99-Cents-Only have 'em three pounds for 99 cents, but you gotta let 'em set a couple days, they're pretty green... (but then so is the MonkeyFilter).
  • monkeyfilter.com has already been registered. Maybe a helpful soul here? monkeyfilter.org still available however...
  • I was afraid some cyber-squatter was going to snatch up monkeyfilter.com, so I registered it. I'm also more than willing to set up a hosting account with the cool three-years-free place.
  • I've got two phone lines... hrm... *goes to read specifics of 1and1 deal*
  • Gah. The whole probably-paranoid (except it's already been done) identity theft meme infected me, too. It's going to be very interesting to see how MeFi and MoFi define unique boundaries. This is super-cool.
  • Things were better, then... Imminent demise of MonkeyFilter predicted.
  • MiguelCardoso, why do you hate America so much?
  • homunculus, why do you hate MonkeyFi so much?
  • Pandemic, you rock my mommy, as a certain other mofite would say. :) I know literally less than nothing about php/mysql, so any contributions to the code you have to make would be invaluable. I'll be in touch at some point via email, once my iBook returns to me. (NEXT WEEK THEY SAY!!!) Now, as far as hosting and domain names go, I'm amazed that we're moving this fast, to say the least. (I was thinking yeah, a couple dozen regulars and we'll all just cruise along. But then in came the mefioso. :) It's great to have so many people here, now I hope I can keep up.) I'll look into alternative hosting - I used to use a Canada-based webhosting company and I'll see what I can work with them. Some very kind soul offered a while back to register monkeyfilter.com (or .org, or whatever) and I may just take them up on it, for the first year, and see how we go. On preview: Kimberly, you're the coolest. I can't believe you already scored the domain for us! *hands over a pony laden with bananananas*
  • ParisPaleoHama111 Witty.
  • Well, I was debating whether to corrupt this place with my MeFi self, but now that everybody else is crowding in, I figured whatthehell, why not. But may I suggest to my fellow MeFites that we not post entries here? It seems unfair somehow. This place is for them as can't post over there. Or so it seems to me. Bad enough they have to deal with our commenting on their ass.
  • Except for Fes, of course, as long as his self-exile continues. Hi Fes!
  • I for one welcome any contribution from the Hat. He speak true. Posting rights are for all members, not for "members who are not also members of some other club". Or so goes my conception of same, anyhoo.
  • Ponies ladened with bananas?! YAY!
  • Wolof, I agree. Posting rights for all! But thank you, Languagehat, for your thoughtfulness. (You know it was only recently that I read your username correctly as Languagehat instead of Laughinghat?)
  • 46 is the new 1142. Puce is the new orange.
  • I like "laughinghat." Maybe I'll register under that as well... for my goofier posts. And thanks for the kind words. (And the bananas.) And I want to give a shout-out to taz, who did the fantastic logo, completely different from the fantastic one she did for me. You're the best!
  • Combine Mefi and Monkey, and damn if there aren't TWO Cardoso's in the hopper :) Hiya LanguageHat :) And also to the rest of the Mefioso *tips hat* No hard feelings? *hums theme from 'White Nights'*
  • Fes, you are dead to me.
  • Who is this "Fes" person you speak of?
  • That's IT! I'm turning state's evidence.
  • Speaking of speaking like monkeys. Hi everyone. Thanks tracicle.
  • Washoe has always been one of my favourites. And, of course, everyone knows Koko. (Don't get an anthropolgist started on primates, it's not wise.)
  • Just thought I'd join the party. Not that I've started many front page posts on MeFi. I prefer including links in ongoing topic discussions. Which brings me here, for the discussion of it. May I add, it looks like a mighty fine site, mighty fine.
  • My gawd, but this all is so *cute*!
  • The "Meditations on Goatse" link I posted above has been redirected to a porn site. I advise against clicking on it. The original was SFW, I swear!
  • homunculus, you naughty naughty boy. *throws banana peels*
  • Nov 26. Good times, good times. *strokes beardless chin*
  • Those were the days. /hums that crappy song from Cats
  • If you mean "Memories", I am going to have to kill you. I had a job as a pit musician that required me to play that song 6 times a week for 4 weeks. Nothing to what the real pros go through
  • My fingers are in my ears. Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end da da da da, forever and a day...
  • In November 2003 There was a very good thread There was a very good thread, all about our friend Goatse Posted five times, you see Yet "Cock" was banned quickly In November 2003 ...
  • ban quidnunc!!! btw, hey kid... fix your frickin webpage! half the links point to my a:\ drive. (which was already nuked a year or two ago.) so, my computer went extra berzerk trying to load all that.. thank you very much. ;p
  • It ain't "mine", as such, Wedgie. Try the new one.
  • All of this went down in the hour that i turned 20. Yup.
  • owww! my eyes!! blue on dark red? gothic script? ouch ouch ouch. it hurts. so who was tara? are you mark? i am so confused.
  • Heh! I'm neither (unfortunately). And now ... In May 2004 There were some very good threads A wedding dress; a man who dug a hole in the floor But, they had been posted before Three times each, or maybe more In May 2004
  • ps - Happy Birthday, Captain!
  • not my birthday now. was 6 months ago, when this thread happened first time.
  • (to the tune of Memories. for Wolof) Goatse... A link you should not ever fol-low Don't let goatse deceive you Do not click and go in... You will find there Something gag-inducingly gross And the goatse wins again...
  • not my birthday now. Happy unbirthday, Captain!
  • *screen goes wavy as harp 'remembering' music begins . . 16mm movies of a young petebest running wobbly through the grass, laughing . . * /bites_trembling_lower_lip_takes_shot_of_whiskey
  • *sniff* So much history lies within these walls... *rubs thread thoughtfully, pondering where all the innocence has gone*
  • Well then, what was this all about? Not me I hope!
  • Depends...have you ever in the past gone by the username "Cock"?
  • Good times, indeed. And a gap of seven numbers between this and the last FPP....
  • There were repeated goatse-ings, if memory serves.
  • Was that Cock? I'm just glad images weren't enabled then. And don't anybody even try it.
  • Ooh! And this is where Fes arrived! I'm enjoying this stroll down Memory Lane.
  • And on your right you'll see a small bronze plaque noting that this was once the home Monkeyfilter's first real troll, a peculiar little fellow who called himself "cock." Now, cock had only one real talent, and that was that he could bend way, waaay over, and then stretch his-
  • Wow, this is historical. I think I came in in December sometime, prompted by Soooz
  • you should see what cock could do with a big plush rooster!
  • We're all so jaded now. *sighs
