Curious, George: Decent Chat? Several recent posts seem to suggest that we monkeys are looking for some decent virtual conversation. Are there any quality chat rooms online?

I used to have some fun with AOL, but either I've changed, or it has. The less said about my attempts with Yahoo chat, the better. Where can one go late on Sunday night to find relatively sentient virtual people?

  • Erm.. mofirc?
  • I gave up on chat rooms and moved to the blogging format a long time ago just due to the cacophony. There are too many voices going on at once to be heard. In a chat room even the most intelligent writer will dumb themselves down to the lowest common denominator. It reminds me of a Jr. High class room when the teacher has put one of the students in charge. Or kinda like Fox news...
  • Scartol-- I'll play with you on any Sunday! The obvious problem is many of our friends here are in such dramatically different time zones that they can't noodle with us ---they're smack dab in the middle of a workday.
  • your point being?
  • I used to BBS (over telnet with Telemate no less!!) and that was loads of fun. Those days are over and I haven't seen anything on the web that really captured what we were doing (not that I've looked at all though.) And IRC is not an option from work. All I have now is instant messaging--which is also not the same, but it cuts down on the wackos. So sad.
  • p_b; ...They're too busy working to play with us!
  • Lies!!! Nobody wants to play with me!! *Runs and hides under the stairs*
  • Well, I'm in the middle of a workday, but this place is so horribly dead that I've got tons of time to prick around online -- it's honestly the only thing to do around here half the time. May I have a raise, please?
  • You do know that #mefi will let just anybody in (and you might just meet quonsar/set there...)
  • Be my friend for a dollar?
  • BBS days aren't over! Echo and the Well are still alive and kicking, and you can still telnet to both. Yeah, they're both smaller than their heyday, but both still provide a strong sense of intimacy and community. (This is my first post. Be gentle with me.)
  • I dropped into #mofirc a few times last night (after work). Not much going on.
  • I THOUGHT I smelled cigarette smoke and cheap beer on your costume!
  • Ssshhh. Don't tell the missus! And the beer was not cheap! Well, the first one was, but after the incident with that lady with the skimpy clothes (she must have been terribly cold) and the camera they suddenly wanted $250 per bottle. Of course, being a respected member of society I had no option but to pay, the consequences of not paying would have been too great. Not for me personally, but I am such a respectable person that the fabric of siciety would have been under threat had I not.
