Las Muertas de Juárez: "Since 1993, more than 320 women have been murdered in Ciudad Juárez, the sister city of El Paso, Texas. Of these deaths, approximately 100 have been sexual-torture killings of young women, ages 12 – 19. Four hundred and fifty more women are missing and unaccounted for."
-Amigos de las Mujeres de Juárez

Victims' families, advocates and human-rights activists have long alleged that the investigation has been hampered by police corruption, cover-ups, witness intimidation and torture.

Diana Washington Valdez, journalist for the El Paso Times who has covered the Juárez murders for several years, has compiled evidence that implicates prominent Juarez citizens, drug gangs and high-level police officers.

Awful.

Great post, about something truly terrible.

I just learned about this a few weeks ago and am still recovering. The police corruption is what really pushes this shit over the edge.

Here's a long Salon article about it from 2002.
Apologies, I don't know if you'll have to watch the ad or not. Worth it anyway.
