Niger economy benefits from trees.

Farmers in Niger have begun loving the trees they used to cut down to grow crops.
I'm not sure this would work to stem the deforestration in South America, but maybe, just maybe, it could spread to other African nations on the edge of the desert. One of those feel-good reports that gives me hope.

Wangari Maathai's environmental activism in Kenya has earned her a Nobel peace prize - and a number of powerful enemies.

Maathai got a reputation for being a strong, and for some troublesome, woman. In 1977, her husband, a former politician, instituted divorce proceedings. In court he is reported to have said that he wanted a divorce because she was "too educated, too strong, too successful, too stubborn and too hard to control".
In other words, she's much better off without him!
